Speedo records higher mileage

Hi, 1996 Hightop 2.5 Had it for 5 years and as far as I know a speedo conversion was fitted when imported by dealer I bought it from. The indicated speed is OK when compared to my wife driving ahead of me at a steady pre-agreed speed.. they both indicate the same speed in mph.
The problem is that the overall recorded mileage is far higher than I could possibly have covered in the time I have had it. It shows 106,000 miles and my estimate would be more like 50,000 at the most.
Any ideas?

it sounds like you have a face plate fitted so it reads speed in miles but distance in km

what is the max speed on the speedo?

My guess is its had stick on MPH face put on it instead of an electronic chip to convert it. This means the odometer is still reading in KMs. Not really a problem as you only have to make that clear if/when you sell. I find it has a positive psychological effect on my buyers urges when I see one like that is first I think it has high mileage and then I realise its not nearly as bad as I thought. Most Bongo buyers with any sense won't be put off by it, and the most sensible buy on condition and not mileage anyway. Also, not have a new chip in it removes possibility of malfunction with auto gearbox etc. which can sometimes happen as it relies (in part) on the speedo for info on when to change 8)

Mine still clocks in kilometers too.. Don't bother me!

If you got a sat nav, set the units to kilometers & drive the distance to a destinaton like yer next shopping trip.. If it matches up, thas what you got?

Providing the speedo is indicating the correct speed in MPH and using the
original Jap speedometer then:

If the maximum indicated speed is 110 MPH it's recording kilometers. (Changed face plate)

If the maximum indicated speed is 180 MPH then it's recording miles. (Chipped)

Can't believe you've only done 41 posts Bongoben, since 2007, and yet you are one of the Tribal Elders and a well known name (and source of good advice) on here. How does that work? :? 8)

mine is the same calculates the speed in mph but records actual distance in kph
all you need to do is like i am doing
change your clocks from 110mph to 180 mph clocks then fit the chip which will then record mph

Hi,your estimation was correct 106,000KM=66,000Mls,its recording in KMs.

You must have thought that you were getting about 40 MPG.

Never mind back to the real world  :)

You could source a mazda 626 speedo clock, in clocks up in mph as well as reads mph, check ebay for people breaking 626s and buy one, swaps straight over and looks like the bongo one just ask them and make sure it says GA5R on the clock face, dont swap the entire dash clocks thoe as it will blow fuses, just the speedo clock
