cold start adjustment

hi guys,
does anyone know how to adjust the cold start on my bongo as i'm having major problems with keeping the engine running in the mornings and after it's been parked for an hour or so.....it starts straight away then ticks over for a few seconds then splutters like mad and cuts out....to keep the engine running i need to sit and rev the engine for atleast 5 mins to keep it going.....i'm also getting alot of serious black and grey smoke at the same time which also happens hen driving and putting my foot down.......any help would be greatly appreciated..........thanks!!!

Is it a diesel? If so, these have a sensor that should raise the tickover for a bit (not 5 mins though) when first started from cold. If it is working you should notice as you suddenly hear the revs drop. So worth checking out first if that is working and how to mend it if not. Have a search on here for past (v. old I think) discussions involving checking the sensor, plus its location (under the engine covers somewhere.
Whilst engine covers are lifted, have a look at the throttle cable linkage as I think there is an adjustable screw or summat that allows you to raise tickover that way.
Also of course the tickover problem could be due to something like like blocked (old) air filter, fuel filter or banjo filter issues, maybe even glow plug related (not sure about that last one but...). Reading about your blue/black smoke issues makes me think the poor tickover is just a symptom of something else.
Incidentally, has this come on suddenly or gradually or has it always been like this while in your ownership. What is the mileage, condition, service history etc. as these may all give clues.

i've had my bongo for just over 3 years and have had nothing but problems with it and have spent around 2k getting things fixed...

.........it's slowly got worse through the summer and now winter is here it's getting worse rapidly......i fitted full set of new glow plugs in april so they should be ok.....i'll check the filters as it's slowly becoming slugish too when driving....thanks again

I had a couple of days with similar symptoms........ starts fine then cuts out up the road, usual suspects have been done like glow plugs (instant start though so not really needed) new fuel filter/clean banjo/K&N just fitted along with new straight through exhaust and after lifting the engine covers after "she" cut out I found leak from Diesel pump seal at the rear of the pump...

.......... just done them with the help of SWBO

she has smaller hands ......must set up a diesel seal service at the Bash...she does the rear seals easy peasy.... Just awaiting battery charge up after caning it yesterday

trying to start her

and finding a stream of diesel pouring from the rear seal....oh well....
