Coolant level still dropping

Hello again,

I topped up my coolant level last night and drove the car. When I checked it this morning it had fallen again to between the full and low levels. I guess this means that there is a leak somewhere. I am going to try and get it in with my local garage (they service Bongos so should be ok with them). Any advice as to where they should look for a leak?

Hope you can help

the leak could be anywhere, sometimes the leak will only show when the engine is hot, look for the obvious staining on the pipes.

Hi Belsbus,

I'm no expert on this, but I believe that the coolant "sits" at a certain level. If you put too much in, it will eject it, until it sits at the right level.

At cold, mine is between the two marks as well.

I'd still double check for leaks, and recommend a coolant alarm.

...and don't forget the coolant sits much lower when engine cold than it does when engine hot...not that I think this is relevant here, unless you topped up when the engine was warm.

Best to get your coolant level exactly on the FULL line when cold.......it will then go up about 1 cm when everything is hot......if you check it first thing in the morning it should then always be on the Full line..
If you can't see through your tank use a "dipstick" vertical down the filler and the level should be 2cm's up the stick (again cold)....overfilling by a large amount will cause it to be chucked out but it will not "find the correct" level, it will still be above the FULL.

Hi. I had this last year and after searching and considering lots of possibilities it turned out to be the water pump. Replaced it and all OK though painfully expensive.

Thank you so much for all the advice......I think that I have probably got my knickers in a twist about nothing as it all seems to have stabilised and I have been checking it when its been parked up on level ground. I think that i will still get it checked over and perhaps have the coolant changed so I know exactly what is in there.

Thanks again...you are all so helpful :P

Excellent :D

Incidentally, do you have a low coolant alarm fitted? Recommend them, for peace of mind 8)
