Sheared off No 1 Manifold stud?

Have developed a noise/squeal and after reading various posts on here have come to the conclusion that it is either the manifold stud sheared off or one of the belts.
The sound is quite a high squeal which happens on high revs when accelerating or when in Park and just revving.
First post of call is the manifold stud. Haydn Callow has posted a helpful pic with an arrow pointing where it is and I've had a look tonight and still not 100% sure what I'm looking for.

As far I was aware the stud has thread on the end (could be wrong) so where the arrow points on Haydn's pic I don't think I have any thread. Obviously as I haven't seen a non-sheared no.1 manifold stud I have nothing to compare it to.
This is what I've got:
Hopefully the pics are clear enough. Any help on this would be appreciated, even just to confirm whether it is the stud or not.
Also, I was also wondering how the stud becomes sheared in the first place? Is it a slow build up or a quick kill!

The one just below the centre of your second picture is the usual culprit. Try turning it to see if it's loose. I have no idea why they go, but it's very common

Right - I now where I'm looking. Cheers for that.
Too dark to have a look now so will check tomorrow.
Thanks again.

Best to take off the manifold cover and check them all tbh. I found i had 2 sheared studs !! Usually a tell tale sign of a black mark were the gases squease through the gap !

Possibly just the gasket. I had a spot of bother a while back.
Gasket initially but 3 weeks later the same sound reared its head but this time warped the manifold & started pulling studs out.

Would've been a lot less costly if I'd not driven around for a week wondering what the noise was!

That looks o.k. to me......are your belts loose ?? if they are just get new ones co's if they have been slipping you will have "glazed" them....a quick test will be to squirt a bit of water or wd40 on them and see if it stops. If it stops replace them. 2 run the alternator and water pump..the other the air con

If the manifold does have to come off, heres a Top Tip I caught too late from Zeon, if you havent done already.

Also a good time to blank off your EGR

Thanks for the replies guys.
Bit of testing in the daylight to do, so will look into the possibles and feedback in due course.
Andrew
ps. was thinking of blanking off the EGR also so hopefully kill 2 birds etc...... (thanks for the heads up Mr M)

After further investigation today it can be confirmed that the manifold stud has in fact sheared off.
So, obviously needs replacing, but would it be wise to replace the manifold gasket and the rest of the studs too just to be safe?
Will also get the EGR blanked off at the same time I think.

Not sure about that - others may know. One thing I do recall peeps advising was to check that the manifold wasn't warped and - if it was - to get it ground back to a flat face elsewise when tightened up it will continue to put stress on the stud thus causing it to go again. It would seem a nice touch also to put a new gasket on (make life easier for the studs by enabling better bedding) but putting all new studs in sounds potentially expensive on labour and maybe OTT

I was thinking that the manifold gasket might be damaged and for the cost of a new one (£31 bongo shop, or £19 ebay) it seems like it might be a safer option in the long run. If the current one needs work (if warped) anyway then it will need to be removed so replacing all the studs too surely won't add any more to the labour I would hope.

You'd think not
provided the old ones come out without breaking
Ar those prices for the manifold or just the gasket?

Fair point about them breaking but by replacing the gasket or sort the original one they would all have to come off anyway, broken or not. That price is for the gasket only - as far as I can see the manifold itself is fine.

The studs are £3.50 each too so I suppose it's £50 for new parts before labour. Peace of mind might swing it for me though. The cost of a new gasket might be cheaper than the labour needed to skim the original one anyway.
