gotta get my self a workshop manual I presume it has wiring diagrams?

When I get a bit of money - I supose I'll be all done buy then!

After the "bleedin bongo's bit" I have noticed now unpluggin the ambient fan switch - by the handbrake- will not turn the engine bay fan on, It was working prior to fitting the hoses etc. I know unplugging the sensor whilst igntion is on after a few sec's the fan will come on. ANY IDEAS TO CHECK QUICKLY - the fan used to work so i presume it still does-

I supose A fuse could be gone have looked under bonnet 2 fuses for fans. Any ideas to save me time before I have to work my way through the system?
It's bound to be something silly I've done whilst carring out work.

Also I have been reading threads on where you guys fit temp sensors. You are taking readings of head in one place or another?

The gauge standard factory temp sender is by rocker cover, driver side into ali casting where water hose comes off head? am I right?

" I have drilled and tapped a sender for analogue gauge into the ali cast tube that the hose goes on that bolts to the head as this is where the factory gauge senses- I hope I am right.- even with the stat shut there should be some coolant flow so my gauge should be good? " I do not like the idea of detecting temperature with a suface mounted senser(obviously works and does reflect the running temp), my probe makes contact with coolant, It just feels safer to me!

Nope the Manual doesn't have diagrams
Good news is there are two separate Manuals full of diagrams, even better news is that they are being scanned currently to put on the Web, but if you let me know type and year I'll drag out the sections you need in advance, or I'm sure Ian will still sell you a set of manuals on CD if you wish to pay out money

But !! If you lose coolant.,...you will lose it from the top of the system downwards....So !! your sensor will quickly become devoid of coolant and cease to regeister......A surface mounted sensor will give the "metal" cylinder head temp whatever the coolant situation is..and..if you place it in the correct position you will get readings within 2 degrees of actual coolant. As I see it you are very little better off than depending on the standard gauge which you can easily make to work by fitting a Mason alarm or doing my suggested mod which costs all of 1p.

I plan to fit a coolant alarm too, I just wanted an accurate reading for coolant temp - not critising tried and tested methods - only that people are mounting them all over the place and getting quite different readings,

If the stat opens at 80/85 deg thats good enough for me, I'm happy with my gauge it seems to work and is the same method used with my stupidly expensive stack dash system which is very accurate.

I do not know how the technology works for suface mounted reading's but as mentioned in some threads near exhaust etc.. which I presume means if there is alot of airflow cooling too? or no air circulating a suface mounted sender might be effected by ambient?- although I supose the temp of the lump is a refection of it's environmet so those factors shouldnt matter. Either way I know my method works,

I just wanted to claify it's position, that if the factory temp pick up point was [/color]near mine, I'm happy.

With oil coolers it's important if it's the flow or return so I know it's relative.
