Bongo Fury

The bongo has failed its MOT! Nothing too major, but two items are a pain. The nearside front headlamp has gone yellow and is now too dim. There is also a fuel leak from the pump area. The tester reckons its down to the veg oil making the seals fail. He hated the smell from the exhaust with a passion too...l was even squirting air freshener around ! lol

Does anyone know a) where I can source a new nearside headlamp lens/unit (not sure if they can be got separate and b) Any ideas on how difficult it is for the seals to be replaced on the pump? Not sure if that's the actual problem as I have not got under there yet and had a good look.

Got to change a gaiter on the steering rack too... all good fun !

It seems a lot of the headlights have a film on them that yellows with age, but it can be cleaned off see this thread.

Bit of investigation lunchtime has found a drip occurring at the throttle end of the pump. There is a small housing to the bottom right of the pump. Thats where the drip is 'dripping' from. Have to give a good wipe down and check if it is running there from somewhere else though.

There's a fact sheet in the members area on changing the fuel pump seals, Ian sells the seals in the club shop too.

Moots, I have just posted on the recent veg oil thread about the pump leak.

I am beginning to suspect that veg oil leaks more readily than normal diesel.

My MOT is due soon so I will not use Veg oil for a while.

I've got the O rings from Ian to to the job but also need the "round tuit" which will help with some of the other jobs as well!

Peeps I cannot see how this guy can blame veg oil alone, I have used it for seven years now, being I think the first, I have never had any problems with its use and no leaks, this guy may be letting his dislike of its smell cloud his judgement. As fas as the headlight goes, try using an electric polisher on it, brings cloudy lenses up like new, tried it on my sons astra estate too and they are like new lamps, good luck.

I'd suspect re the fuel pump seals, it's more to do with the veg oil being thicker that causes the problem, creating higher pressures in the pump when cold especially, thus possibly increasing the risk of the seals leaking if they're getting iffy anyway?

As for matey at the garage. I cannot believe the smell of chips caused him so much discomfort! Perhaps he was a health freak! lol

outside..... I used Plastix from Meguiars but you could use brasso..... just be gentle..

Re seals, VO & BD will break down natural rubber seals. you must make sure they are VITON for use with Oil for long livery. Modern seals are made from Viton but you need to be sure.
Same applies to fuel lines natural rubber will break down so need to keep a watch on them. They will weep first, then is the time to replace with suitably resistant tubing.
Suitable Viton seals are available for the bongo Bosch Pump, usually grey not black.

I did think of a universal jobbie. Took the old one off last night, thought I might as well change the track rod end at the same time as the dust cover had split. Was going to drop it into my local spares placce to see if they can do a match up.

Polished up the headlight a bit last night and you can see the improvement already Will give it a bit more tonight/Saturday.

Just waiting for the seals now for the fuel pump. not looking forward to that bit I must admit! lol

re yellowy lights.

mine cleaned up a bit using Autosol scratch remover, not pristine..but a lot better.
