half empty or half full?

the fuel dial on the dash is not reading properly. when i fill up the dial only goes up half way, sometimes further but then drops again slowly. any ideas would be most apreciated

thanks for everyones help, advice. i will have to pass this info onto my mechanic though as i am not that clever at the fixing up stuff. thanks again to all. where would we be without this support.
