gearbox oil level over full???

Post by FREDA MIND » Mon Sep 14, 2009 2:41 pm

Hi there, i have recently bought a nice freda 2.5l d auto which i am very pleased with, however when checking all the fluid levels i noticed the gearbox oil level appears considerably over full to the indications on the dip stick(i inch above full!)am i correct to assume the levels on dip stick are with the engine off and gearbox static and vehicle level? assuming it is overfull, could this have damaged the gearbox in anyway
please help kindest regards new member rick :?

Level must be checked with the gearbox warm - ie having driven for at least 20 minutes, on the level, wheels chocked Hand & footbrake on, range slowly through all the gears, then leave it in D to take the level (less bubbling/turbulunce apparantly), it should be a reddish colour.

Welcome to the forum :D
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

Hi Freda mind... Try checking the level with the gearbox warm, box in D, brake on wheels chocked etc... You'll find that the level drops a bit... Too high a level is as bad as too low a level. If you have access to an extraction pump, then extract a little ATF at a time till the level is correct. If you have a PELA pump, this can be achieved via the ATF dipstick tube).

thanks for your responce guys, great stuff!!
im going to make this job top of my to do list,i have only just bought my freda which was imported last year and for peace of mind think ill treat it to a change of atf ,clean the filter and de sludge as you described in your great post kirsty!
the colour on the dip stick dosnt look light pink ,more pale yellow so im a little concerned if it has the correct oil in it,
the gear box runs lovely and smooth and i want to keep it that way,
where could i buy a pela pump?
i have friends in the car trade so they may loan me one,
think its pretty much a must have for this type of job!

oh p.s i think im in love with my new freda, is this normal behavior or should i get more????
