Bought some new alloys, but.......

I'm having second thoughts. Got these on ebay to replace my 17" split rims I already have due to an annoying slow leak.

After the reading the post where a member has blown 2 diffs, it was suggested that wrong tyre size might be a problem. I was going to just swap the tyres I already have onto the new alloys but I'm now wondering if they'll be ok. I currently have 235/45/17's...and its a 4x4.
When we bought the van at Easter I noticed on the return journey that the speedo was running about 5 mph slower than normal and put it down to the larger alloys.
Will I have a problem? Any help much appreciated.....cheers......

As long as you have the same rolling circumference front & back you are fine. If you have 4 identical tyres, then there should be no problem.
By law/some regulations, your speedo cannot under-read, so you need to remember what speed you are actually travelling at.

The diff/vc problem is when the tyres are different diameter between front & back, as Simon says, If they're all the same diameter, there won't be a problem. If the speedo is under reading, you can carefully pull the needle off & move it round a bit

I believe it's illegal to under read though, as you'll be going faster than the speedo says.

No, sorry its actually the other way....I'm going 5mph slower than it reads which I gather is ok.....
I'm getting the tyres swapped tomorrow, if I need spigot rings, any idea which size I need?.....thanks

That's alright if it's over reading

can't help on the spigot rings, I think you'll just have to measure?

With regard to spigot rings, I bought some alloys off ebay which were a make that nobody had heard of!

When I had them fitted it was noticed that I needed some spigot rings to make them safe. As spigot rings are associated with the particular make of wheel (and no one had heard of mine )I had to go for some 'generic' rings which thankfully fitted. I can't remember the size off the top of my head but maybe I was lucky that they fitted!

If you go into any reputable alloy wheel dealer with the make of alloys they should be able to sort you out with the correct spigot rings.

ps mine were £5 EACH!

just so you know!!!
