bleed valve instead of bung

just a thought but would it not be possible to have a simple valve made to replace the plastic bung, that would make it easier to bleed these bongos

That's an excellent idea. Maybe a simple tap on the end. Trying to get that bung in while boiling coolant is issuing from the pipe is not health & safety friendly

Anyone got an idea of what might do the job?

Not a bad idea, you'd have to make sure it completely sealed if you're going to leave it on there, but I think I'd be happier using it to bleed, then when it's cooled down & you're happy it's all ok, take it off & stick the bung back in, easy enough to do that & make sure no air gets back in. It'd certainly save some hot hands

I'd still want to be able to stick a funnel on the end, either via another bit of tubing or fixed direct to the valve & I'd want a decent flow through it to allow the burps to escape

Something like this perhaps......... http://www.cbsonline.co.uk/heater-valve ... -478-p.asp

Ohh - that looks good. Do you know if 12mm will be the right size for wedging securely in the bleed house? Might have a flutter if so 8)

Someone posted a while ago about fitting a self bleed nipple (or sumat like that) from a central heating system cant remember who it was, try doing a search

The automatic air vent is a good idea, an adaptor tee made up to fit it in the head where the temperature sender sits would be the ideal position for it leaving the vent pipe free for filling/bleeding. The auto vent would then bleed off any air/gas that traps in the head during use.

Hadn't thought of putting it in as a separate fitting on the head  , surprised you haven't already got one fitted TGP

Be careful with automatic air vents, they also pass hot steam.
I've been scalded on more than one occasion !!.

I was chatting this morning to a pal about putting a valve or tap in the bleed pipe and he suggested looking on this classic car website, I have looked and come up with this............ http://www.holden.co.uk/displayproducts ... =Fuel+Taps......

Now my theory is......... get a tap and 2 adaptors and fit in the bleed pipe around 4 to 6 inches or 100 to 150 mm , from the end, the theory being that you bleed as usual until all the bubbles and burps have exited the system and instead of having to quickly whack the bung in the end of the bleed hose.........turn the tap to off.......AND......the coolant at that point would be free of air so none could re-enter the system.....

Yes, and its not clear to me that when the operating presure of the system builds up, they won't just allow coolant to vent out of the system. I think a tap is a safer bet myself unless someone can reassure me otherwise

By their design they don't let water out, hence them being an automatic bleed valve  But I just don't know that I'd trust them, I must admit I was thinking much more along the lines of what t'other Mike was talking about
