drivers side window problem URGENT

Hi all
I am in Italy on holiday and wound the drivers window down and it will not go back up!!!!!
i have taken apart the switch and it all looks ok
skyped ian and he said to check looms etc which i have done
any ideas on what to look for [passenger side works fine]
if push comes to shove i need to know how to manually put the window up - motor will not rotate to let me physically lift it...... i also tried a wirs from cigarette socket to motor and it sparked but did not move????

Check the dreaded door loom, you can see it when you open the door.
Often gets a break in cables there.

Did the fault show any symptoms of being a bit intermittent before it packed up completely. This would indicate either swithc or wiring look fault. Otherwise, do fuses need checking (don't know which but hopefully someone could advise).
My drivers window switch went dodgy and I got it working 100 again by stripping down and cleaning up contacts. A bit fiddly geeting tiny plastic lugs to release but I got there. Also, dismantle inside a bucket or similar as there are ball bearings and springs that tend to pop/drop out and tthey'll get lost v. easily if not contained.

I had the exact same problem last weekend, took the switch apart and swapped the 2 buttons over. bit fiddly but its working fine now, you could try leaving the part of the assembly with all the electrics exposed and reconnecting it then operate the swith manually. probably not a big help but hope you get it fixed ok.

well i took door loom apart and nothing dodgy there. took switch aprt and no dirt or anything i could see although i did not take the thing that looks like a variable resistor apart the sort of slider with a white lever.
we did try applying current to the motor directly and it diod not turn.
my biggest problem seems to be holding the window closed. i have taken out lots of screws and cable tied it closed at the moment but it took ages to loosen everything the bloody black gunk that holds the plastic on is a real pain.
going to try driving with it now and see if it works to stay up = problem is it is 40 degrees here so hot with the windows closed and not a lot of tools on holiday!!!
thanks for suggestions so far - all tred but none are the problem. seems to be no easy way to get thwe window motor off???

Ah - that slider thing was what I cleaned to get things working. From memory, I needed a watchmakers screwdriver or two to gently depress the tiny snaplock lugs so I could open it up and get inside. I think I then used a modelling knife blade to gently scrape off the crud on the tracks.
You didn't say whether the fault had been intermitttent before the window packed up completely?
The black goo is best dealt with by slicing at it with e.g. a breadknife whilst pulling the polythene sheet away from the door. It then splits into two beads, one on the polythene, the other on the door, without much trouble. And you can reunite it all when the job is done.
I nearly bought some Bongo flyscreens off ebay as insurance when my switch was dodgy, in case it went when away from home.

BLACK GUNK TURNED TO GOO IN THE 40 DGREE HEAT

NOPE ALWAYS WORKED 100%

Doesn't sound to me like the switch really as those usually fail after a period of dodgy operating. Wires, motor or fuse sounds more likely. I wonder what those more expert than me think? Overall, it sounds like rigging up a get-you-home-solution is where efforts are best focused

Sounds like the motor could well be fubar, or the mechanism/runners need some lubrication/fettling. Not a lot of help to you out there, is your aircon up to scratch

has anyone taken off a motor? it seems nearly ipmposible to get at the bolts on the far side of the motor to remove it.
