Clicking not Starting?

Hi Fellow Bongogetters,
Our belove Bongo - and we have fallen in love with it since buying it at Christmas - does not always start first, second sometimes third times. It just makes a clicking noise. Took it for a full service two weeks ago and asked mechanic to check but says he just couldn't get it to happen (odd) and tried lots of times and it started first time. I reckon starter motor probs but husband says relay prolems.
Any pearls of wisdom most welcome.
Catherine

Contacts are the usual problem, see
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MAZDA-BONGO-FORD- ... 286.c0.m14 but also get your battery checked, it may be on it's way out.

Hi Catherine, welcome to the forum

, your only up the road from me I live in Liversedge
Firstly to rule out the glow plug relay you should here it click on an off when you turn the ignition, if you get your hubby to stick his head under the bonnet he will or should hear it click on and off as its located on the bulkhead or on the inner wing depending on the spec of your bongo, if thats ok check the battery (ies) to see if they are getting charge and holding it if they arnt it will be either the alternator on its way out or the battery (ies) are fubar, if they are fine then the most common cause is the starter selonoid pack on its way out.
You can replace the selonoid pack on the normal starter but if you have the winter pack on your bongo then its a new starter I am afraid as the winter pack has 2 starting batteries and needs a bigger amp starter motor which is a sealed unit
how to change starter contacts...

Hi All
And thanks so much for the swift and very welcome advice. I'll get checking. And by the way Wayne if you have any tips on good local mechanics who know their bongos from their elbows I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks again
Catherine
PS I'd have added a smilie if I could've worked ou how...

Is the clicking quite fast? Like a machine gun with no bullets? If so the chances are the battery is too flat to start the engine...as previously mentioned, the glowplugs cause quite a drain to the battery, that in conjunction with turning over the starter in a big cold diesel lump can be just too much for even a mildly suspect battery. Many auto-electrician outfits will perform a free charging check for you. That should pinpoint where the actual fault lies.
