Bongo Fury

Hi all, could do with your brain power on this.

Over the last few months or more, my bongo has be having an intermittent stalling problem. He starts up no problem but after driving 350 yards or so, he just stops. Restarting he coughs and splutters but starts, we end up having to drive him two footed at juctions, till he warmed up(?) or on the motorway.

He gets a full service every 6 months, the last one was only at the beginning of July. I never mentioned it to the garage as it is so random. He can go weeks with no problem, then it will happen 2/3 consecutive days and then just not do it again.

So it's over to you, any thoughts/advice?

Sounds like the same problem my brother had, it turned out to be a fuel pump ,and they are not cheap.

Yes I have read that thread and thought the same, bugger.

I was hoping it would be something else as it only happens shortly after starting. So much for hope.

Some times it can be just a simple build up of pressure with the fuel cap ,or vacuum, not sure which, but by releasing the cap to relieve the pressure/vacuum does seem to work ,sometimes.

At least you know what it is. You can spen a fortune chasing intermittent faults.

Worth a look Dave, is there a 'Sucking' sound if you remove the fuel cap? And I think it would get worse after warm up, rather than better.

Thanks guys, will give it a go. Or thinking I have, as when it happened today I was off to fill him up. I can't say it happened or tried to stall after or that I heard a sucking sound.

Anyway, looks like freddie wants a new fuel pump then. He always has to have his own way!

Could it be the fuel filter or the banjo filter/strainer? Worth checking the simple bits first.
Do you have any fuel leaks around the fuel pump?
I seem to remember a similar case that was loose exhaust baffles.
Obstruction in the air intake, there was a case of a water bottle under the bonnet blocking the intake.
Is it relative to the level in the fuel tank at all, ie, does it get down to a certain level & that's when it happens, could be crud floating around that only gets anywhere near the pick up when the level gets low, or it could be a holed or loose pick up pipe in the fuel tank (unlikely, but I'm pretty sure I remeber at least one case).

Thanks Kirsty, no signs of fuel leak and will have a look at the filters & air intake. With regards to the fuel level, thinking about it, it has stalled on a full tank before & today it had 1/4 of a tank before fill up. It only stalls on the first start up of the day, could it be a temperature thing???

could be glow plugs

can you hear the relay turning them on and of for the first minutes

I think the glow plugs & relay are working, can hear click noise.

We had to pop out today on a short journey, hubby used the opened & closed the fuel cap theory. Started up no problems, then got to the same junction, no stall, carried on with no coughs, splutters, loss of power, nothing.

So now do I think that's the problem solved or was freddie having a good day.
