in line glow plug fuse

Have been on here trying to sort pout some problems wiv our bongo.SLG3 96 plate.
Started wiv replacing glow plugs,wrong size used so shorted glow rail,this was evident from blown 30a fusible link next to battery. replaced fuse,put correct size plugs in,insulated rail and all was fine for a few days.
New inline fuse blew again and again.
Have replaced kaput battery,replaced alternator,replaced relay but fuse still blew every time immediately on start up.
Hubby bypassed in line fuse for a while (i know thats not safe!!)
Looked to me it was a wiring fault from relay to glow rail???
Having had father in law take a look he has now replaced the 30 amp in line fuse with a 40 amp and is now not blowing and all seems ok.
Is this safe,sniffing constantly for burn out???
Would the wiring from the relay to the rail be able to cope?
Also had some overheating problems recently,dont know if this is related.This was before new battery,relay and alternator
Any suggestions would be so gratefully received.

I personally wouldn't want to put an over rated fuse in to "solve" a problem, it's put in there to blow if there's a problem - which it's doing, by putting in a higher rated fuse that problem still exists & you may now create another in that the wiring may not cope as the fuse is designed to melt before the wiring.
I doubt this is related to the coolant issues you've had - unless maybe you've had any sort of leak anywhere near any wiring?
I'd go back & check over where work has been done, something may have been disturbed that you haven't spotted.

Thanks Kirsty, glad im on here at last so that i can finally sort this problem out.
Im inclined to think that it is the wiring from the relay to the glow rail.
Father in Law came to the conclusion that putting the 40a fuse in place of the 30a original would fix the problem on the basis that the new alternator and battery were now generating more power through the fuse,relay and wiring.?

Nope, it depends on the current being drawn by the glow plugs rather than what is produced. If that was the case, they'd have put a 40 amp fuse in when it was all new, think about it
I'd take the glow plug rail off & the glow plugs out, make sure it's all clean, nothing shorting out etc, carefully put it back together & work back from there. You say in your first post you replaced the relay, was that the glowplug relay?, check all the wiring & connections etc are ok there if so - worth checking anyway.

Yes original in line fuse was the kind made of wire which had become brittle and yes the relay is the glow plug relay.Will get the hubby looking into the glow plugs and rail tomorrow,thanks.
This whole forum has been a god send for info since the glow plugs first shorted the rail.

Just a quick update.Hubby was unsure what he was looking for so took Bongo to garage for diagnostics. Just heard from garage that all ok, glow rail is drawing 31 amps and all looks fine.
Im guessing from this then that the 40 amp glow plug fuse replacement will cope then.

NO, NO , NO , NO, NO.
There's a 30 (Thirty) amp fuse so it blows if the circuit draws more then 30 (Thirty) amps.
If the circuit is drawing more than 30 (Thirty) amps, for example 31, there is a problem with the circuit, and the fuse is put there to protect it (the circuit).
If you fit a 40 (Forty) amp fuse something else in the circuit (wiring or components) will fail, possibly causing a fire.
I suggest looking for the problem, not fitting a 40 amp fuse.

Thanks for that Bob,back to the garage it is then. Thought this would be the end of this problem.
So are you saying that the glow rail should ONLY be drawing 30 amps? Or am i missing the point?

Do you know what ampage rating the cable from the relay to the glow rail should be?
