No fuel to the fuel filter?

Hi Guys/Girls of the forum this is my first post so hi to you all. I have just spent my only day off (Sunday) laying under stretched over my newly aquired Bongo (2.5 DT) All was fine before I touched it, well except the leak from the fuel pump at the bottom plunger housing (common problem I see) well I decided to tackle the leak and followed the walkthrough on Bongo fury and what fun! 
I eventually replaced the two O'rings re-fitted the springs shims backing plate etc all looked fine, I also had purchased a new fuel filter so I struggled getting that off but eventually it gave in and I won! new one fitted. Now the problem it wont start! There is no fuel in the filter dry as a bone I understand that the pump should self bleed foot to the floor and turn her over, but not a drop to the pump or even the filter. am I missing something? Is there some kind of unique procedure a switch, cut off perhaps? Any suggestions greatly received.

) and tip the contents into the filter housing. bung the rest of the contents into the fuel tank. As you said, foot to the floor and crank the engine - should start immediately - with a cloud of smeek!
