wonky temperature gauge

hello all

this is my first post so probably all wrong!

the temp gauge on my Bongo after a while starts to fluctuate between its normal third of the way up the dial down to zero. Sometimes it drops off the scale altogether. There doesn't seem to be any evidence of overheating and it runs likea dream Is it just the temp sender unit? Hope somebody can help because I don't know if the gauge will tell me if the van does start to overheat.

regards to all
Andy

Welcome to the forum :D
Usually it just sits at 11-o-clock until after it's overheated, so it's fairly useless as standard anyway. If yours is fluctuating, sounds like you've got a dodgy sender or connection, might be worth doing a search, or wait until someone comes along with specifics.
Once it's sorted, fit a Mason Alarm - http://www.townace.plus.com/ie/ietemga2.htm

Like Kirsty said, the Mazda gauge is no indication at all - you may as well paint it black for all the good it does.
Thermostat stuck open would cause the engine to underachieve temperature-wise?
To quote Kisty again, 'fit a Mason Alarm' or similar.

thanks for the info folks. I'll get a mason alarm asap and get it fitted at the next service. I think the temp is actually fine but the gauge doesn't show it. Trip to the motoGp at Donington this weekend with three big lads in it will make it overheat if there is anything wrong!

thanks

Hi andy, it does sound like a dodgy temperature sender unit, compatible part number is..
Intermotor 52551, its located under the drivers seat towards the front of the engine just behind the egr pipe.

check this thread out it has a photo of where it is 8)

but it could also be a loose wire on the sender unit itself, or the contacts may just need cleaning, its just 1 wire with a spade conector on it, take it off and clean the contacts, might be a cheap fix [-o<
