Tyre Wear . . . think it's called "Stepping"

I'm told it's called stepping, but to me it looks like my front tyres are wearing rather like the turrets on a small black rubber castle. Up bit, down bit, up bit . . . . all the way round, but only on the front.

It all got rather like badly balanced wheels and when I took my Bongo in to have it done they told me the tyres had "'ad it!" So I got them changed, balanced and proceeded to get the tracking done . . . but the tracking was spot on!

They decided then that it might me to do with camber and castor, but they couldn't do that for me, and weren't sure whether that could be ajusted anyway on my Bongo (W reg 2.5 diesel). (What do I know, I am but a humble music lecturer, microphones and pianos I can do, camber and castor?!?!?!?!?!)

After they made a few phonecalls it came back officially "its a known issue with these vehicles, you'll 'ave to liv wiv it"

Surely this can't be the case? (And if it was then lots of other people would also be having this problem . . . .wouldn't you???)

All suggestions greatfully received?

many thanks to you all in advance.

Try to check your shock absorbers, the stepping might caused by bouncing wheel...

Hi
It could be, possibly, and only possibly, worn suspension joints and bushes, or track rod ends...I don't think we've heard of problems with shockers on here...even when they are very worn...I still think the tracking is the most likely suspect, and wheel balance.....take it to another garage for a double check...fact sheet in member's area on tracking...take the figures to the next garage.
Cheers
Helen

Hi and welcome merrlyn.

What size of tyres have you... different sizes front and back? ( 195's on front / 215's on back)
What type of tyre do you have on... van tyres?
Are you 4WD?

If the answer is yes to all above, then I had the same problem originally, along with flat spots... tyre more like a 50p shape. My problem has been sorted now due to having the same size tyres all round 215's AND the correct type of tyre, ( sport touring... not van) making sure it's the right load rating.

Worth checking these topics out......

I too have the 50p front tyre problem. I showed them to our local garage and he said it was because they were made of cheap rubber! Not sure whether to trust him or not.
They make a hell of a lot of noise, so much so that people look round when I 'm approaching (though maybe the stereo up to 11 to cover the tyre noise).
I have the normal size van tyres, Falken 195/70R15C 104/102R, which were admitedly cheap but all they had in when we turned up with a flat tyre on 1 and poor tread on the other and on our way out for the day. Oh and were are 4 wheel drive.
Can I fit the larger tyre on the front on the same (steel) rims? Or just the right type of tyre.
All and any comments greatfully received.
