Bongo Fury

Hi Folks,
Had Bea almost a year now and love her loads. But she seems to occassionally judder when trying to pull away in first or when reversing.
If I pull away in second, then there is no problem.

I cant state for definite, but it seems, maybe, to be when Bea's engine is warm/hot. Has never happened pulling off our drive.

Has anyone else had similar, or have any clues?

Possible clutch judder or worn engine mounts?

Not sure if I described it properly, looking back at my first post.

It is a kind of kangeroo'ing like it is about to stall. I have to give her a few extra revs to get past it.
I would guess at a kind of fuel starvation except that if I pull away in second, the problem doesnt appear.

It isnt always there, and probably only when Bea is warm/hot.

It's doing my head in, as apart from that, it is a perfect partnership. Like with my wife.

sounds like its a manual gearbox i take it????

have you had the fuel filter changed??

It certainly is. It's bad enough dealing with wipers and indicators being on different sides in different cars (I have to drive the wife's Honda Jazz a couple of days a week). Jumping from manual to auto gearbox would just about finish me!

Had it changed last summer, just after I got her. Air, Oil and Fuel. Didnt change the glowplugs - but it couldnt be related to them, could it???

If it pulls away ok in second but not first, I'd say it's more likely to be a gearbox or clutch problem, have you checked the gearbox oil level at all?

I edited the title to include "Manual", may help get a better response

I havent. Where do I find it??
However, in my defence, I have recently found myself grinding the gearbox on a couple of occasions where I appear to have let the clutch out too early, before getting it into the next gear. Never did that in my previous car, and hadnt done it in Bea until recently. So maybe the clutch is on it's way out?
I would ask why a clutch (or gearbox?) on it's way out would stutter in first or reverse, but not in second. But I might be getting in way above my limited techie head!

Don't know much about the manual box on a bongo, doubt there's a dipstick, probably a plug on the side of the casing which you'd have to undo & use a bit of wire poked in to see the level. May need oil changing? don't know what the service interval is offhand.
I am thinking about it more from the perspective of why would there be a fuel problem in first & reverse but not second. If the problem isn't there in any other gear, that's where I'd start looking, logic & ellimination Might be barking up the wrong tree though

Is it a bit rattly on tickover, with the noise disappearing or changing slightly when you slightly depress the clutch to take up the slack before the real pressure starts?...if this is the case, then it may be your clutch release bearing is on the way out...trouble getting into gear...clutch itself, or...selector forks....grinding...layshaft bearings or worn gears....but then I'm no expert on the Bongo gearbox....
Does anyone have any idea if the Bongo box is shared with another vehicle?....if so , it may be easier to get info.

Manual gearbox/clutch seem to have cause me similar probs on other cars either because engine is hot or else clutch is not bedding smoothly. A resonance is set up with the engine mounts and that can lead to the car jerking and a resonance setting up with the drivers clutch or throttle foot! Early transverse engine cars (remember the Mini) seemed particularly prone, but our Spacewagon had to be watched v. carefully too as the high centre of gravity (which the Bongo also has) meant a fore and aft oscillation could really get going. My wife gave herself a big fright the first time she drove it. The solution was a confident right foot giving decent revs and then a positive left foot releasing the clutch. But clutch judder can become a worsening problem. Do I recall someone saying to me years ago that oil getting on the plates from a worn thrust bearing would cause juddering esp when plates get hot and 'sweat'. Maybe a techie on here could comment
