Tyre load ratings!

Hi,
I have been looking around for a set of alloys for the bongo, mainly being RX8 18s and I have learnt that the load rating for the bongo is 92 on the front and 96 on the back. I then looked at the tyres on the bongo currently on a 16'' alloy and they only have a 91 load rating front and back!!
This has slightly concerned me, as i paid £400 for the tyres and it seems they might not be upto the job. Is the garage that fitted them liable for this or does it not really make any odds, considering they were fitted 2 years ago!!
Thanks
Will

2 years is a long time to then go back and claim from them.
how much life is there left in the tyres and if your changing the wheels why not change the tyres along with it

From here
http://www.tyresave.co.uk/tyreload.html
You can see that the front are "only" 15kgs each under spec.
Load
Index
..... Kgs
91
........ 615
92
........ 630
96
........ 710
But the rears are 95kgs EACH under spec and that is a lot.
The problems could have started if one of the rears had blown out and you'd had an incident that lead to a Police investigation and report that got back to your insurers.
As said a bit late to go back now, but worth remembering how good they are at their job for future reference.

Yes thats kinda what i thought, the tyres are in near mint condition still, loadsa tread left on them.
Although i have also read that our insurance might be invalid if the load rating is not valid!?

I ran some 91s on my first set of alloys for quite a few months. Come 1st MOT day, they failed it 'cos the back tyres had split pretty much all the way round on the inner sides. Scary to see!!
Suggest, short term, you get underneath & check yours haven't done the same.

No one has yet had to test this, but 190kgs under spec would give them one hell of a let out if you (or even worse someone else) tried to claim.

Perhaps you had better ring your insurers and ask em eh.

Remember that the Bongo is a narrow, high vehicle which will load up it's tyres more when cornering than most.........................

Hi Will,
TBH as it was so long ago I don't think you'll get very far with a reclaim.
I'd look around and find a good set of replacement tyres, I have the same wheels as you and am using accelera tyres. so far I'm impressed, it rides well and they are quite grippy and quiet. They are load rated at 101.

Yep and if you shop around, like down here in wales they are £35.00 each fitted, that is for a 215/65/15 and they are 100 v rated. I have replaced my nangkangs with them and they are damn good.
