Bongo Fury

What's the best engine oil for the Bongo ?
Anybody have a preference ?

I am more than happy.

I've opted for 5W/30W as I do a fair number of short runs and prefer my oil to move around more freely when cool (theory being better lubrication and less friction so better fuel economy). I can't remember but either that oil of 5/40 is whats recommended. No doubt someone else can remember and will advise.

Thanks, that's really interesting. It kind of underlines the value of forum feedback, because the expert on the fact sheet said that anything other than mineral oil in an engine that had done over 25K was most likely a waste of money .
However, you are obviousley happy with your oil, and use it regularly.

It is my experience that the semi synth oil is better at dealing with the turbo bearing high temperatures. If I was running mineral oil, I would stick to the scheduled 3000 mile oil change, but as I am running semi-synth I change it every 6000 miles.

No concerns about not using the information from the fact sheet, written by an expert, in the members area then


Thanks for the information, I found it very useful and informative.

Should of said, I use semi-synth where available at reasonable cost..........cos I bl**din well fancy it that's why. I also allow my oil changes to slip towards 5k mile intervals

That's what makes the forum interesting in my view.

I get the impresssion that whatever oil you put in a ( high mileage diesel) Bongo, would probably be Ok as long as it wasn't left in for huge mileages.
But then again, I am no "expert "

Wow - that's interesting!!! I wonder how well the tech spec meets the needs of Bongo steeds (and their owners £ pockets)? Also, what would it take to allow used engine oil to be shoved in the fuel tank for useful disposal, as that would be interesting if someone could crack the problems.

We used to chuck the used lub oil in with the bunkers (heavy fuel oil) on the ships, but I suspect it would need some heavy filtering to be able to chuck it in with the diesel, not sure you could get away with a very high percentage.
Look what happens to your exhaust fumes when oil gets past the piston rings.

It's made from saturated cow fat.
But there's nothing to say you couldn't use any other animal fat, or even the waste product from liposuction.

I bet jaylee would have something to say about that
