Diagnostics

Hi all,

After one year of stating the hold button doesn't work I have finally replaced the hold light bulb  .

The hold light is flashing suggesting there is a fault. As previously stated the hold function doesn't work and also the kickdown function doesn't work. After purchasing the service manual I tried to carry out some diagnostics with a voltmeter. However according to the service manual I have to connect the negative probe of the voltmeter to the FEN terminal but there doesn't appear to be a contact in this part of the diagnostic terminal. I grounded the TAT (automatic) contact as stated but when I turned on the ignition I didn't obtain any signal codes.

Is the FEN terminal point supposed to have a contact strip?

Also I am thinking that the failure of the kickdown and the hold function are probably one and the same thing. Is it possible that the throttle sensor could be the fault?

I have just changed my gearbox for a second hand one and the fault is still there so the problem must be something other then the gerarbox.

Any suggestions please.

Thanks

Benjy

Hi again,

I have now managed to diagnose the fault through the hold light as being the throttle positioner sensor (code 12). Does anyone know where I can get hold of one of these and if so how much they cost. Is it likely to be anything silly that could cause this fault rather then having to change the sensor.

Cheers

Benjy

If I am correct then it tells me that the Mazda Service Manual has a mistake in it regarding the diagnostic terminals

I know BF member and mechanical guru Dandywarhol had to fit a new TPS on his. Try PM'ing him or search on here. I think it was somethign over £100 for the part and (except there was one in stock somewhere in his case I think) there may be a delay ordering from Japan (my memory is ufzzy on that though - could have been something else)

Just to pass on the outcome of the diagnosis etc.

Thanks to Alan (Dandywarhol) I managed to purchase a new Throttle Position Sensor (not cheap!!). My mechanic fitted the device and now both the kickdown and the Hold function both work. I feel like I am driving a new Bongo after a year of having neither!!

After purchasing the new TPS I received an email from 247 spares as follows:

Part 1: THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR - FORD FREDA 2.5 TD AUTOMATIC 1995 - MORE INFORMATION REQUIRED Additional Notes:
We can offer to supply, repair and recondition your own unit from ??39.99.

As I had already purchased a new one I haven't followed this up but I thought I would post the info just in case someone else has the same trouble as me. Not sure if they can do it but may be worth checking out as it potentially could save someone at least £150 (or maybe more as the price of the TPS is likely to go up another £50 due to exchange rates).

As I have stated maybe they can't do it as I haven't called so if anyone does call them it may be worth updating this forum.

Regards

Benj
