Front blower not working. Advice please.

Hi all, the front fan is not blowing on my diesel 95 2wd Bongo. It had this problem when I was looking to buy it. The guy said it was probably the relay and he would change it before I took collection of it. It was done and has been working fine for 5 months but this afternoon I picked it up from my parents for the weekend and the fan isn’t working on any of the blower settings. I have quickly checked the fuses and they all look fine so I guess it’s a relay problem. Where is the relay for the front blower? Is it the one on the right hand side of the engine bay by the water tank? Are they standard items I can get from Halfords? If so I will get one before I go camping tonight.
Cheers
Dan

It could be among other things, a Resistor problem, or/and a seized fan. Check this lot out for ideas.....

Chances are Daniel you'll have to strip the motor as it's got wet, gummed up & overloaded the resistor pack, all repairable if you can wield a spanner with any competence, as in the FAQ's & factsheets linked to above.

Check the windscrren drain hole in the centre, this get blocked with crap and then when it rains the water flows over the lip and onto the plastic cowling over the heater motor and ends up seeping in and seizing the ball jont in the bottom of the motor. Easy fix for the motor, but the resistor will need to be resoldered.
Loads of info on the forum just do a search

Well its done. Have paid my member ship to hopefully get access to some good info!!!
Did a bit more trouble shooting with the blower this evening. All the fuses are fine. I took the connector off the back of the fan twist switch and checked it for power with a volt meter, nothing was coming through. Not sure what to check next? Hopefully there will be what i need in the members area.
Cheers

Hi all,
All sorted now. The £12 joining fee is well worth! There is a wealth of information in the member’s area.
Checked the resistor, it had burnt out. Re soldered it and put it back. Turned the blower on and off quickly and still not working!? Checked the fan and it had jammed. Freed the fan and spun it by hand a couple times. Tried the blower again and it was fine. So I guess the cause of the burnt out resistor was the jammed fan. Sorted but i will have to keep an eye on the fan and make sure it doesn’t jam again.
Cheers all

Has anyone improved the fan bearing or fitted some sort of cowl to protect it from water ingress to avoid this problem occuring ?
Expecting a flurry of 'no's'

More to the point can you oil the fan bearings without stripping the thing out? I dont use my Bongo everyday, at best its every weekend so i think it may jam again. Will check it everytime before i set off now though. Lake district in 3 weeks with some big mountain flying!!!!!!! woop woop

MissFixit70 (Kirsty) stripped her fan down and degunged (de-rusted) the bearing and oiled it, giving a very good result. Strongly recommended in your case I think as the fan sounds v. suspect. The prime cause of this is that the draiaway pipe for the gutter underneath the windscreen gets blocked and water overspills onto the fan housing and thence into the fan, causing corrosion and seizing. So check regularly that your pipe isnt blocked (which reminds me I've not checked mine for a bit!)

All the info is in the FAQ as stated twice in this thread already
http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... 43&t=28727.
You'll have to strip the motor out I'm afraid, doesn't take very long, but if you don't I can pretty much guarantee the fan resistor will go again.
It'd be worth enlarging the drain hole under the motor to allow any water ingress to drain away, it's too small IMO, gets clogged up, which then means the motor is sitting in water as it's the lowest point.

Thought it might be, but didn't dare say so on a hunch and kind of imagined that it couldn't be as the original writer sounded like they'd read all the bumf already so.....
Believe it or not in all my time on BF I've been in the members area oooh, about twice? I never have the latest password to hand you see and I'm an impatient old buff
I do wonder if there are others out there like me (don't answer that)
