Oil leak/Filter

Hi All,

I have for the past couple of months developed a bit of an oil leak. I have the usual rocker leak but this one seems a little worse. Im not losing loads though it looks bad on the drive (or the school car park!).
I cleaned off all the oil underneath so I could try and track where its coming from. It looks like the there is a steady drip when under pressure ffrom the oil filter. I have taken some pics of before and I will take a couple of after, but it doesn look like the filter.
I had it fitted by a reputable garage and it has been on for longer than it should (about 9 months) so could do with changing. It doesnt feel loose to the touch (by hand).

So could it be that the filter is knackered, or old, or something more sinister?
How hard is it to change the filter yourself? Im pretty good with DIY etc, done brake pads and stuff. My nearest garage that I trust is over 1hr away and is normally a day out which I cant afford with a disabled child.

Any tips on what I will need to do it and what to do and NOT to do would be great.
Also any opinions re the leak would be great too, i will post some pics up later.

Thanks as ever,

Ramsey.

The filter could be improperly tightened -- too loose or too tight could result in a leak. But it's also possible that you have a dodgey filter. I had one that would not seal at any level of tightness -- coincidentally about 9 months ago. I bought a new filter from somewhere else, and all was fine.

It's not hard to change the filter. the worst part is getting the old one off. I prefer claw-type filter removers, not straps.

I have this filter tool, which works well both on bongo 2.5TD oil and fuel filters even if they are on too tight:

Change the filter if it looks like it's leaking, you should be able to leave it on for a year at least, so it could just be an iffy filter.
There's a fact sheet in the members area - http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/member ... ts/oil.pdf on changing the oil & filter.

Cheers all, I will stick some picks on so you can try and help me diagnose it is the filter.

I seem to recall there being an issue with a batch of filters that were (mostly) recalled, some were purchased never to return (i think Ian mentioned this once on the forum) It would appear that you have one of the dodgey one's.... :? Replacing it should cure the problem..Don't forget the obligatory smear of fresh oil on the filter seal prior to fitting.

Ok the latest update.
I changed the oil and filter and managed to get a good look underneath. It appears that the oil is either leaking from teh old filter or a breather pipe. I have done a few good miles in her today and there is still a little weep so Im guessing its the pipe.
There is a pipe that goes from the bottom of the block up to the turbo and the mechanic told me (non bongo) that its a breather pipe. The pipe had something wrapped around the bottom as if it has had a repair on it. It was also a little wet (oil) top and bottom. I suspect whilst changing the filter and removing the attempted repair I have disturbed hte pipe and made it slightly better. I imagine there is a slight crack somewhere that with power and heat gets worse. I couldnt feel anything obvious.
These were the only places there was oil (except the usual rocker).
Does anyone know where I can get this pipe from, what its called and how easy it is to replace?
The mechanic said it is possible to blow oil out of this if its cracked? what do you think?
Like I say its under the passenger seat, rubber pipe connected to the top of the turbo going down into the engine block and its about 25mm thick.

Any help as ever appreciated!

Cheers

Rams.

It is the return pipe for the oil feed to the turbo. They all have a plastic shroud on them, so possibly not a repair. And they are usually slightly damp with oil.

Well the leak has defo imporved if not gone completely.
The bit of plastic wrapped around the pipe fell apart in my hands, do I need to replace it with anything?
Thanks for the info all Im feeling a tad confident it was the filter. I havent had chance to have a good look and cus its new oli it may be harder to see but it certainly looks better! I can smell oil though i must admit Im in that paranoid state where I can hear all sorts just because Im worried about something.

Cheer all again, I love this place and them schematrics were amazing!!!

Thanks

Rams

Thanks for the info all Im feeling a tad confident it was the filter.
It tightened OK then, good one! As the plastic shroud is around the cable for a reason (heat protection?) I would replace it with some cable protector.
