Rumbling Backend !

Always had fair bit of road noise at the back, marginally worse over the 3 years of ownership.

So jacked each rear wheel off the floor and ran with wheel spinning, offside not too bad, but noticably noisey
when repeated on the nearside.
Tried shaking each wheel when raised and no play detected, (did pass its MOT couple of weeks ago) attempted to manually spin wheel for rumbling but the wheels were catching a bit on disc brakes.

So is this conclusive that the wheel bearing on the nearside needs replacing, or is it a possible diff problem ?

Please advise how i can be more confident of the correct diagnosis

Thanks

If one brake grabs a bit more than the other and you run it jacked up you'll find the diff will be noisy as it's having to work - it might be giving you a false impression.

As for a rumbling back end..........................

Hi Heskin.

Have you checked the diff oil level and condition? If at all dark, worth draining it off - and perhaps straining it to look for bits of chipped tooth...!

Diffs tend to whine before they rumble, but that's not to say it ain't the diff.

Check the fluid first.
