Hi,

Ive done a search for speaker sizes on the board but found conflicting info. If I'm just wanting to change the standard speakers front and rear, what size should I be looking for ? Also, does anyone have a specific type thats worked well for them ?

5.25" (13cm) in the front. There have been topics discussing upgrades.

I've just got some nice new replacements (JVC CS-HX537 - catchy eh!). I hope to fit them this weekend, so will let you know if they're a good straight swap and sound okay.

Ta. I fited a new head unit today. Just a no name from Maplins but it takes SD cars and USB sticks to play MP3's. That was easy as wellhouse had sorted all the wiring for a kenwood head unit. Will get the door panels off next week. Is there a guide to that or do you just remove those three screw cap covers ?

Two screws toward the hinge, one with the cap on on the outer edge, one screw in the door pull & don't forget the screw in the door release catch..!
The door card then just pops out ( i usually pull from the bottom ) & slides up!
The door release will go through the hole in the card...

With regards to the window switch; i put my hand up the inside of the door card while the bottom is popped out & un-clip it from behind. (two clips either end of the switch).
The switches can be a little stiff to remove & unplug, this method saves potential damage to either the door card or the switch surround that could occur from prizing them up from the outside!

I found having the window down helps too..!

Always thought that the sound in my van was pretty good - put it partly down to the Blaupunkt head unit . When I took off the side panels recently when laying the floor ( you have to trim a bit from the bottom of the panels ) I discoved a cracking set of Pioneer speakers . Then checked the front speakers - Pioneer too - result!

Just had a go at my rear nearside speaker which hasn't worked since I had the bongo five years ago, shocking I know, lol, managed tp free the panel but cannot see for the life of me how to actually lift it out completely, there just aint room with the rear bench seat no matter how I slide the thing, tried a new speaker but still dead, so must be something between the speaker and dash, I think a trip to my local audio wizard is on the cards,lol.

I'd to rewire mine David. But check under the centre console - there's a 2 wire connector to the right of the handbrake which feeds rear speakers - you might be able to feed off that

Mine seems to have been rewired with thicker cable in Japan

Okay - the speakers I've got don't fit. The Mazda originals seem to be larger than 5.25" to the outside diameter - more like 6". 5.25" (13cm) replacements will leave a gap around the mount. The Mazda ones are also 3 screw fittings, not the standard 4.

The JVC ones I've got are also too deep - the tweeter bits stick out too far and will interfere with the grill. So a complete waste of time and money!

Does anybody have any tips for saving my purchase? My wife is already annoyed with me for spending £30, so I could do with saving a bit of face if nothing else

hi dom-e would it be possible for tou to make a spacer ring out of mdf to pack your'e speaker out and away from the door skin. then you could remove the origanal speaker grill on the door card and replacewith you're new ones.i had to make mdf rings to pack mine out,like this

Thanks Tay. I was hoping to avoid lots of DIY (time is precious with a baby), but I think it's going to be the only way. I'll have a potch around when I've got some more time.

Do you find the gap between the inner door skin and window when its down very small?? mine in around 1.5inches form it and really reduces the size of soeakers that can be fitted. i have seen posts on here of 6x9's being fitted but i cant see how its done even with a packing behind it as surely they would still stop the window from going all the way down?

As with another post above i have also got pioneers installed in the fronts im guessing from japan judging from how they look and have been wired.
