Bongo Fury

I'm just about to do an oil change with a new filter as well, but having not found the recommended 10/40 oil, I've brought some fully synthetic 5/30 (Halfords own) and semi-synthetic 10/40 (Mobil). Is it okay to mix the two to create a 'hybrid'?

Not recommended, go with one ot'other, both are fine to use, I use 5w 30.

Cheers. I'd read that thread with interest, but was wondering if there was any value in mixing the oil types to get a bit of the best of both types. Sticking to 5/30 on its own seems like the best plan.

personally I'd always stuck with Castrol oil GTD turbo diesel...then changed to Shell similarly rated, but now use ELF 10-40 semi-synthetic...The engine is a lot quieter and smoother, and lubrication appears to last better, as the engine is quieter towards the end of it's service interval. The viscosity rating for the upper figure is popularly believed to be the final viscosity figure when hot. Not so. The figure 40 refers to the ACTUAL viscosity that a straight 40 grade oil assumes when at working temperature, so is actually LESS than 40 grade. Purely personal, but I like a slightly higher viscosity on an old large engine, and, as I say , the Bongo seems to like a 10-40. I also tend to run past the 5000 Km service interval by 500-1000 Km, but change filter each time, using Mann filters where possible.

The topic of oil does seem to split opinions! It seems there are arguments for using thinner and thicker, so I'll see how it goes with the 5/30, for the moment and re-evaluate options after the 5000km. For the record, I used Halfrauds fully synthetic 5/30 for Audi engines. I couldn't figure out why there were different 5/30 oils for different manufacturers, but it seems that the Bongo engine is pretty forgiving so I hope it's okay. If not, let me know and I'll do another change tomorrow!
