Hi,
I was wondering there is a lot of talk about the coolant alarm and masons???? gauge. what are these, and why are they needed (why does the stock unit not work?)
What is recommended?
How much would it cost?
How do i install it or is a a garage job?
plenty of questions but i can't be the only new bongonaut wondering this.
Also are there any other 'essential' items that my Bongo may need in a similar vein to this?
Cheers
Etienne

Hi there,
The coolant alarm is a system that is easily installed that warns you if your coolant level drops, i.e it warns you if your coolant is leaking out, which in turn would lead to overheating and engine damage.
The Mason alarm is a system that makes your existing temperature gauge more accurate. Right now your temp gauge "filters" out the highs and lows so it almost always appears at 11 o clock, when in reality the temp will go up and down depending on load, outside temp etc.
This gives you a better idea and more forewarning of overheating. Both systems I believe have a warning buzzer too.
I think they are both a good idea and for both it's probably around £110 but you would need to check on that.

There is no "stock unit", the temp gauge is dumbed down to be as much use as a chocolate fireguard, with such a complex cooling system (nearly 20 hoses up to 14 years old) & easily knackered ally head, it makes sense to fit as much warning as possible.
This does not mean you don't have to check hoses (ideally replace them all) etc on a regular basis, it just gives you peace of mind that you'll get a warning if something unforseen happens that could result in a very expensive overheat.
One of our forum members has just forked out around £1500 for a knackered head after an overheat, do the risk assesment & the sums & make your decision.
