Bongo Fury

Just a quickie,

Am i correct in thinking a 4wd Bongo should never be towed (for any great distance anyway)? I also assume this applies to towing with either all wheels on the ground, front wheels up or rear wheels up?
Still awaiting the garage to collect and fix the old chap up after my mishap the other week. Needing the correct ammo if they turn up expecting to tow him the 20 or so miles to their garage.

Currently driving a Vectra.
I'll be having a shave and haircut next

Don't think you should tow 4WD or Auto and if yours is both it's probably a double no-no.

Good job it's not a Corsa then - the transition is even more painful..........

Either a sex change and love of anything fluffy and/or pink or a frontal lobotomy and surgical removal of your cap and refitment the wrong way round.

PS Ohh yeah.... forgot about the compulsory baggy trousers transplant.

My Basic understanding is that automatics should not be towed far or fast.
If 2wd then it would be OK with 4 wheels on floor or front raised. For long distances I have seen someone disconnect the driveshaft on a bongo and tow it on a dolly.
4wd, would be OK with all wheels on floor, but not front raised.
However my advice would be get it on a flatbed truck for anything more than a mile or so rather than risk damage.

Don't tow an auto - the gearbox bearings could suffer as the oil pump isn't urning.

Less than 5 miles are possible if the gearbox oil level is overfiled by a litre - remember to drain it when finished........

They'll be getting told to 'get tae' if they show up without a flatbed.

i was told by the very very nice aa man that it could be towed under 15 mph for short distances but because it was on the motorway it was not possible and after taking advice off these knowledgeable peeps now would always insist on a full lift.....

Remind them its 2100 kilos too, some will only carry up to 2 tons.

"Curb vehicle weight: 2wd: 1770kg / 4wd: 1790kg"

Dunno about that Simon , that may be as they come but I ran mine over a calibrated weighbridge last year.

Bullbars, half a tank of gas, tools & stuff in the back & conversion unit was 2140 kilos.

I guess once you add in a conversion & the weight of the stuff we all carry around, then it all adds up.

Imperial Cars, from where our Bongo came, specify gross vehicle weight as 2260kg for all their conversions, whether 2wd or 4wd - although it's not plated on the vehicle by them, and DVLC have not specified a gross weight in our V5. I have also seen 2260kg quoted as permissible gross weight in another thread here - and have asked does anybody know where the figure comes from?*

Our 2wd Imperial V6/LPG/AFT rear conversion checks out on a weighbridge at 2080Kg, with "full habitation equipment", tools and "luggage", plus full petrol and LPG tanks, but with no driver or passengers. Add Mr and Mrs Ron, and there's not a lot of margin left - there's no bull bars, roof box, bikes or what have you, fitted.

I wouldn't run the risk of a tow... I'd insist on a flatbed lift.
