Bongo Fury

Well - after reading several threads on droplinks etc I changed my rear droplinks and anti roll bar bushes. Yes the nuts were tight, but I got them loose with a very good flank drive spanner and a hammer - and what a difference it has made (the demented drummer in the back has been evicted )

I also changed the Fuel filter and the oil - not sensible - the fuel filter was no problem, but I used one of those oil collecting cans and the oil came out of the Bongo much faster than the can could accept it it's a good job we don't have a nice drive

So the next job will be the front droplinks and bushes (they only show up on really bad roads at the moment - so not urgent) - but I will get the oil changed at a garage next time

Excellent news on the droplinks.

Don't take it to the garage next time for oil change. My experience was similar to (though not as bad as yours). So I bought a Pela 6000 pump (search ebay etc) and now extract the old oil through the dipstick. Makes the job an absolute doddle, 100% clean too and I can't recommend it highly enough. One or two changes later and you'll more than have covered the cost in saved garage charges.

I have to absolutely agree with Mike.

I have had a Pela pump for a couple of years and now
I often change my oil just for pure entertainment on a
Sunday afternoon.

But then, I'm a really old fart with not much else to do.
I also use the Pela to change the gearbox oil. I must try
and get out more often and do some mileage between
oil changes !!!!!!!.

If I remember right it was about £12 from a ship chandlers. I use it for getting the bulk of the oil out, then I remove the sump plug to get the dregs.

Mike Jill and Emily, a tip for you.......DO NOT remove the sump plug when it's windy.............. It can get messy

Could this be what is causing me to turn up the 8 track.... drum drum drum, from an unspecified area of the Bongo. Its worse on low speeds over smallish bumps. Please HELP driving me mad.

I too am an old git... Can i just share my exhilaration at removing my old ATF fluid with somebody who understands the joys of the slurping sound of the pela?

Did you manage a gnats gnadger under 5 litres of fluid out too?..it left me in something of a quandry actually as i'd only bought 4 litres of top up! It was a good job i needed a wee! (now i know what the "P" on the gear selector strip really stands for!)

Happy to know that I am not alone in my unusual choice of entertainment.

Because age has affected my eyesight, I find it difficult to determine the
true oil level of ATF fluid when doing the gear lever jiggling bit, so I managed
to get a spare dipstick from a scrappy and have sprayed it matt black. I
rubbed down the sharp edges back to bright metal and it works for me. The old
one goes back in on a permanent basis.

When removing the ATF, I measure the amount in the Pela and replace the
exact same quantity and then do the dipstick test again. As my short term
memory is going rusty as well as my wheel arches, I can't remember the
exact quantity but I am sure it was slightly more than 5 litres.

Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn !!!!!.

Does that apply to me or my Bongo ?.

Discount Dave - almost certainly the drop links. Is the sound from the front or back?

You can 'feel' the sound as well as hear it! Drop links simply 'go' at around the age of our Bongos - so if it hasn't happened yet, it soon will.

Cheap to do, tho, even for a garage.

I hope this message gets through (and to the right Bongonaught) regarding gear box oil.

We have recently bought our first Bongo and i'm planning a spot of servicing this weekend and am interested in what has been said about changing gear box oil.

Is this necessary and how is it done as there does not appear to be a fact sheet or any mention of such an operation in the servicing schedule??

Any advice gratefully recieved!
