The head saga has drawn to a close - new head, high pressure, new gasket,, head tested, still buggered - verdict block knackered. So I'm looking at buying a 2nd hand engine from one of Ian at Churcham's scrapped bongos. What do you think friends? Is there anywhere I might source a recon, with a guarantee?

In my opinion for what they are offering that seems a resonable price,
is there any chance the person/company you bought the head from will refund you as it wasn't the problem? (and who said it was?)
To give you some comparision, I have been quoted by a reputable auto gearbox specialist £1200 to rebuild my box
Obviously it's not gone there. Which ever way you go good luck, I hope it all works out for you.

Sometimes best to get the same person who supplys the engine to fit it - that way if there's any problems the refitting labour isn't your problem.
Did they use a genuine Mazda head gasket?

They got a head gasket from Japtec, but they apparently supply a better quality one and the garage tried both - he couldn't figure out why Japtec, who he deals with regularly, had supplied a poor quality one to begin with.

Bumbly1 had a new head fitted with a spurious gasket and it pressurised immediately. A Mazda one cured it.
