Newbie Question - Gearbox Oil / Power Steering Fluid

Hello Folks, Just did a quick check of the Gearbox oil / Power steering Fluid and the power steering fluid is well below the minimum and the gearbox oil is at the minimum mark.

Given that I checked the levels cold I assume that, since the gearbox oil is probably all sitting in the sump, that I'll have even less when I check it once it's warmed up!

I believe I need a D3 (DIII?) oil for the gearbox, but what do I need for the power steering? I see that Halfords do a combo DIII Gearbox/Powersteering Oil so I assume its pretty much the same stuff? The guy in Halfords wasn't sure but seemed to think it needs Ford-compatible oil. Apparently if I go back tomorrow there is a guy works there who has a Bongo - wahey!!

Anyway am I right on the gearbox oil and do I need something specific for the power steering or just the same stuff.
(Oops - forgot to mention it's a 2.5Dti Auto)

Thanks in advance for any help.

Iain

You cannot check the ATF cold  You have to drive it around to get the oil warm, place it in D (chock the wheels first) and then check the level.
Power steering fluid is the same stuff.

Thanks guys.

Yes I know you should check the ATF warm - figure if it's that low cold, it'll be non-existent warm! Will check it properly tomorrow morning though.

Slightly disappointing that the folks I bought it from supposedly serviced it. They certainly changed the engine oil but, obviously, the service didn't extend to lifting the driver's seat.

All a learning experience though!! :D

Tends to read higher when warm - the fluid expands............................... 8)

Checked it when hot and it was absolutely fine.
