V6 Fumes in Vehicle on Startup - Clears Almost Immediatly

Hi All
With collapsed road surfaces, snow and potholes big enough to loose a mini, my Bongo has taken a bit of a battering recently.
I now get fumes in the vehicle when starting the engine. This clears almst immediately. By the time I have reversed up the drive all is well again. I only get this in very cold weather. Well cold for down here. The problem started when it snowed and went away again once it warmed up. Today it snowed again and the fumes happened again.
The exhaust and manifolds look fine. Also there is no extra noise and once the engine gets going no further problems.
I suspect a leak on the air intake but can find nothing. No sign of any perished hoses or anything jarred loose.
Can anyone suggest the cause? There are no local Bongo experts nearer than Discount Trucks, so to get a diagnosis requires a fair journey.
The problem started before my local garage made a lash up of the alarm. Now working perfectly and reasuring me that nothng overheating is going on. The fumes had stopped by the time they had it.
The Bongo is running perfectly. Starting first time, very smooth and no excess fuel consumption. Apart from being a V6 of course.
Thanks in Advance
Mary

Check that your engine covers are sealing properly. If not, just bend the clips a bit.

Hi,
What is the smell exactly, exhaust or something else.
With mine, if I start and and either backup immediately or the wind is going in the wrong direction, the aircon can suck some exhaust fumes into the car. Could that be happening as you say once you get going you don't smell it anymore?
Do you only notice this when first starting up from cold? If so I do suspect the thing above?
I have just bought one of these to check a few things out on another car as I suspect a leak that I cannot find:

Just had another thought.
Under the bonnet just right of hte middle as you are facing it, there is a large black plastic air intake. On that there is a lever. I set mine to winter to get warmer air into the heating system (this is for the heater not the engine air). I have an issue with a rubber smell and it could be me moving that lever to suck in warmer air from around the engine is causing the problem I have.
Maybe worth checking yours and moving to summer setting, could help.

Thank You Both Apole and Francophile
I just had a look for the winter/summer adjustment lever. Did not find it, mine is a hot weather Bongo so might not have it. But what I did find was that the front end of the air intake was loose. Where the scoop attaches over the radiator the bolts are missing and it had jarred loose from the main air intake, leaving the system not gas tight. The air conditioning was on to demist the windscreen so probably sucked in the fumes.
I have pushed this back together and will fit the missing bolts. Also I have tightened up the engine cover cover clips as well.
Hopefull problem diagnosed and solved.
Thanks Again
Mary

I also have an issue with a rubber smell on my V6 i thought it was the heater fan or resistor but they are OK. It's now in the garage (for the past month waiting for parts) having the crank seal replaced so it could of been oil on the belts till it burned off making the smell as it only happened for the first ten minutes.

Fingers Crossed the problem is fixed. No further fumes and the original were exhaust not rubber.
The crank seal does seem to be the V6 weakness and is a possible if the problem comes back. What are the symptoms to watch out for?
Can one of those who has had this problem or knows about it provide an idiot's guide.
