flashing hold light

hi all,
sorry for not trawling through old posts,or using the search option, but i`m in some discomfort, and can`t spend long on pc at a time.
when coming home from work today in the bongo(a journey of only 1.5 miles)shortly after leaving work,i had to stop at some traffic lights.when getting ready to move away,i felt a slight`lurch`like when the autobox is put into drive, and raised my foot off the brake slightly in readiness to move off.surprisingly the bongo didn`t`creep`forward as normal, and in the periphery of my vision i saw the `hold` light on.thinking i`d accidentally hit the button,i looked down at the light, only to see that it`d gone off, then it flashed on,and off etc.i quickly realised that i might have a problem, and worried that i`d be stuck at a busy junction with a bongo that wouldn`t move.so,i quickly turned off the engine, selected park and restarted the engine.then all was well and i continued my journey home with no further problems.
as i restarted the engine so quickly,i didn`t have chance to count the flashes or check the frequency.
any ideas?
i haven`t checked the gearbox fluid in a while, but when i did(with engine running, select all positions in turn several times then finish off in`drive`with the handbrake on)all seemed fine with no nasty coloured fluid.i have never cleaned or removed the gearbox filter.
thanks
jamie
