Bongo Fury

Hi all does anyone know the correct number for the main starter battery as in 075, 027 etc.

According to the manual . . .

80D26L (55)

Or

95D31L (64)

Someone might know what that means.

The compatible parts Database above gives it as Battery (105ah) Motaquip VBZ44 Land Rover Discovery that is what I have in my Bongo.

105ah sounds a great idea, provided price isn't too extortionate.

I went to a battery specialist over here when mine finally gave up last year ( I always leave it to the last minute).....The guy at the shop said 100 A.H. was normal for a japanese 2.5 diesel, as he couldn't find the Bongo listed. It cost about 100 quid, so I hope it's a good'un

Local battery place just put a 335 in mine. Huge difference starting.

Interesting. I'm more and more sure the Bongo doesn't thank you for putting a low rated starter battery in it. it would make sense really given that its good to maintain voltage to the glowplugs while engine is being cranked. Certainly mine, with a 95Ah battery in it, gives perfect starting every time (now I've done it )

Agree with you Mike, I took the view that is the one they recommended and it has a 3 year warranty, so if it don't work 3 winters from now I'll be back.

How much does a battery anywhere between 95- 110 cost in the UK?....we find a lot of things expensive over here compared to the UK
Bob & mike...I definitely agree that you don't want anything less in terms of amperage...as you say, just click the button and it starts. I'm just guessing here, but if you have to crank AND warm glowplugs, the starter takes a fair bit from the plugs causing them to work inefficiently,and if they are not working as quickly as they should, then they will wear out rapidly....under-heating the plugs may be as bad as overheating them.

Very interesting point. Inadequate battery power (not voltage) on my model glow-plug engines didn't necessarily show up if you checked the glow on a dry plug. Once fuel enters and starts quenching them, resistance drops, current goes up, battery collapses etc. and the plug temp becomes too low to cause ignition. Not only that, but it is subjected to thermal shock I imagine. So yes, I reckon your theory would make sense.

335 battery is 95amp with 710 cold crank,it should be more than enough for this engine.

That's my thoughts, Mike, as I used to experiment with hull behaviour in hydroplanes using racing model glowplug engines....one engine in particular took us about 5 hours to start, and may have been due to said syndrome, as it glowed perfectly outside, but failed to start....changed the plug, same thing....
You mentioning models made me think of what I have been toying with at the back of my mind....a pair of jet engines in a model boat.....that would be good for a bit of speed

Different situation but about the same really I think as its a big lump to turn over. For the price difference (nless things have changed with rising prices) I think its not worth cutting corners. I ordered a well priced one, delivered quickly to me, from http://batmanuk.com/

Give them a call and say you want a 95Ah or better battery and what would cost be, what would fit etc.
