Bongo Fury

Hi, I have a problem with the electrics on my 96 Bongo. When I connect the battery leads the aircon pump clutch clicks in and drains the battery overnight. Could this be the relay? If so where can I locate it? Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Most of the relays associated with the A/C seem to be mounted over the O/S wheel arch however the exact positions vary with the model. Its not helped by the wiring location diagrams being a trifle difficult to read as the lines merge/cross with the objects themselves.

Hi Wi11iBongo,

If the clutch is coming on as soon as you connect the battery then the relay must be fused with the contacts closed, or the signal from the ECU is shorted to ground.

As far as I can tell from the schematics the relay in question is the middle one in the bank of three in the covered box that is the closest to the main battery. There are two such covered boxes, both in front of but below the main battery - just pull off the covers to get at the relays. Again as far as I can tell all the relays in these two boxes are the same type - so it should be straight forward to swap the suspect for one of the others and see if your problem goes away. The relay to the left appears to be the horn and the relay to the right appears to be the scavenger fan. So if you swap the relays and the horn/scavenger fan comes on then its the relay - if there is no change its a short on the wire from the ECU to the relay coil.

This is all going from schematics (its too cold and dark to go out and try it just now) - so please satisfy yourself that these are the right relays and that they are all the same.
I can look into it in more detail at the weekend if you still have problems.

Assuming your looking at SphericalVisions then you get some strange looks when you up the tripod/monopod and take a photo of the ground and/or sky

Hi, I won't know until the weekend, I'm away working, I found the correct relay and it does deffinately seem to be the aircon clutch as the clicking wasnt there when i removed the relay, Ive replaced the battery and relay and will hopefully be able to fire it up Friday evening. I hadn't posted as I didn't want to jinx myself!!! Thanks for the great advice guys, and hopefully all will be ok when i get to it.
