Start inhibit - Auto Bongo

Hi guys, I have just about got my Bongo to the point that it should be about to start up after a long and frankly, hard engine and cooling system rebuild. I bought the vehicle with a seized engine, so have never actually had it running. My difficulty is that the starter won't work with the key (I arranged a temporary push button and loom to make it work), but the reversing lights are permanently on when the ignition is switched on. I appreciate that start-inhibiting unless N or P is normal with an auto, but can anyone tell me where the switch to control this is please? Is it in the gearbox or in the shifter?
On another note, I am I the only silly b****r to undertake a full engine rebuild on one of these beasts at home? THere seems to be lots of topics covered on the forum, but not much about getting the engine out or apart. Perhaps everyone else had more sense!!
Regards,
Duncan

Well done on you perseverance with the engine - I hope it all works when you do get it fired up

. I've done the head gasket etc, but thats about as far as I'd go.
As I recall it, there is a manual inhibitor in the form a cable (like a bicycle brake cable) that goes from the gear selector to the lock barrel. Or I may be getting mixed up with the thing on the brake pedal. I'll have a quick search & see what come up.
Yep - here we are. The cable labelled 46-300 goes to the ignition barrel:

Not sure whether that is any help, but it may point you in the right direction.

Do I remember a Bongo on ebay with a seized engine? Sounds like you've conducted a masterclass in mending a broken Bongo - I take my hat off to you and sorry I can't offer useful advice. But Simon has and others will be along with thoughts soon no doubt. Oh and welcome!

Hi Dandy!9-444 is the inhibitor for the D ,does this also control the reversing lights switch.
I was thinking of using the reversing light actuator for a rear fog light feed.
Cheers Malc..

How will that work then? Fog lights only come on when going backwards

Yep - generally do both - inhibit and reverse light

Hi Simon,You pick up the wiring from the reversing lights at the actuator, you only use the wiring to the reversing lights, incorporate a switch/feed etc.Change the bulbs to Red.This saves running wires from lights to switch etc etc.
This is for a MOT situation.
Then you can reverse the situation if you wish.
Cheers Malc..

Ah - I see now

. Wouldn't that leave you without reversing lights though? I know Imperial (amongst others), user the drivers side reversing lamp as a foglight by using a red bulb/filter, but at least that leaves one reversing light on the near side.

Hi Simon, you are spot on,but as I have mentioned this is for MOT purposes.then revert back to the SQ.
I really dont think that reversing lights are much cop on any vehicle. They only let you know where you are if you already know where you are,if you get my meaning.
Cheers Mal..

Makes sense: reversing lights are not an MOT requirement but a fog light is. Reversing lights on the Bongo are pretty useless when you've got a tinted rear 'screen. I fact I often switch the foglight on when reversing at night to get an extra bit of illumination. They're only really to let other motorists know you're about to hit them.
I think the only possible worry would be with the idea of using reverse lights as a fog light just at MOT times would be if you were involved in an accident in the fog or pulled over by the police. It could be argued that it was not roadworthy. It's not a big job to fit a flush-mounted fog light in the bumper & then you've got it ready all the time.

Simon, again your are spot on,just leave the mot situation as it is, with the reversing lights as fog lights,as we agree the reversing lights are crap.I have a notion that there might be a dual purpose 21 watt DC LCD bulb in the pipeline,if so that would give Rl and Fl on the same lense.
