hose question

Just noticed I have a long, narrow black rubber tube - floppy, maybe 1cm+ in diameter, with a u-bend at the end, hanging down underneath my Bongo. It runs from back to front along the passenger side and, I assume, should really be attached to something on the engine block.

Now I recently had the head replaced but have driven from Devon to Suffolk and back without worry.

And I'm just off to check the coolant levels.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Dave

Sounds like your bleed hose is hanging down.

Lift the passenger seat and check that there is a long thin hose coming off the engine block and almost over the top[ of the alternator.

It should continue to a U clip at the front of the compartment then around inner edge to be tucked out of the way behind some electrical ducting.

Very important to check for chafing and replace the whole hose if you find any.

You will overheat your engine if this goes.

Many peeps put a protective sleeve over the hose where it passes over the alternator.

good luck

Just back from under the van...

I wondered about that but I thought that was the slightly bigger one which (on mine at least, comes out over the top and is clipped to the side where, if you unhook it, can pop out of the passenger door. With a cap on the end. This seems to come from the back end of the van and then, as it meets the Gearbox, suddenly turn backward again for about three centimetres. It's right underneath, under the rear footwell in effect. Does it go to the rear heater somehow?

I've just put in about 3/4 of a litre of water and there doesn't seem to be any water coming out of the hose - at least, nothing is wet under there although there is some oil on the bottom of the engine block.

As Harry said, it sounds like the bleed hose under the passenger seat, you'll have to lift the seat to get to it, there shouldn't be any other hoses aft of that on the passenger side. The rear heater is behind the drivers seat.

Agree with Kirsty - can't think of any pipes in that area. Can you trace it back up to see where it comes from & any chance of a picture?

Been crawling underneath today, there is nothing aft of the front passenger door in the way of hoses, unless it's something that's been retro fitted :? .
My money is definitely on the coolant bleed hose, if it's dropped out of the clip, it dangles down further back than you think - I know - cos I just tried it  The end was roughly level with the back edge of the passenger door.
Make sure you check it hasn't chafed if that's what it is.
