Bongo Fury

After having a service last week it was pointed out to us that we had a small leak from the fuel pump. We went to a diesel engineer and the cost of the job inc VAT was £517. We picked the Bongo up today and the engineer said he had to replace all the seals but the charge was almost all labour charges we think. Can anyone say if this seems a fair price or a little over the top! Grateful for any comments. We think in future it may be worth our while making a longer trip from home to Wheelquick in Wigan.

Wheelquick next time I think. I have leaky O rings on my pump. Wheelquick replaced one (at v reasonable cost) but now the other has gone so I'll book it in to get that done. However it is possible that this may still not resolve it. Mike at Wheelquick advised that should it ever be necessary to replace the unit, cost would be £500+ (I think he said £600). But the point I'm making is that the diesel specialist should in my view have been able to talk and act similarly (most reports of leaky pumps on here involve the O rings, and have been fixed at low cost).

But if it is now done, and done well, and there is a 12 month warranty to say that it won't leak again (there should be from a specialist and with a bill like that so check), then it is probably as well to be philosophical and just be pleased it is now fixed and running. I still have to wait and see where my road runs.

I paid £45 labour for my garage to replace the fuel pump O rings when I had a fuel leak.

I supplied the seals which cost a couple of quid.

They did the job in situ with an apprentice with small hands and using the factsheet from this site.

I would have paid £45 to have mine done Harry, there are three O rings and all easy to replace......................LOL...........................Just a few bolts to undo then repace the O rings that are just a seal. The one at the back that Dandy did a post on is a Pig, I couldnt get my hand where he did. I had to remove the injector feed pipes and force my hand behind the pump to replace it...........the scars have gone now.
The rear (where the injector feeds are) O ring is under the triangular nut. I machined up a socket to fit, gave it to Wheelquick to share in the club

Probably the small handed apprentice came in very usefull

there are many more than 5 seals in the fuel pump, around 30 or 40 and if some have gone it may be best to get the lot done, if you phone around you can get a good deal. i paid around £200inc vat

That seems an incredibly good price for what must have involved removal, stripdown, rebulid and replacement. Were they diesel specialists. Do tell us more

Had a run out yesterday to Delamere Forest and Bongo ran well. I still have a feeling we were ripped off for the job. He told my hubby that all the seals were when he checked and had replaced all. He had taken the seat/seats out etc to get to the fuel pump cos the central console had not been fitted back correctly! Hubby had not noticed on driver's side as it seemed ok there but when I went to get in passenger seat there was a big gap and then found screws loose - this was after my original posting. Could not get it to fit right and had to go back to the garage. We will MOST definitely go to Wheelquick in the future!

i did phone a number of different diesel specialists and had quoes from £200- £400 eventually i went with the cheapest and luckily theey were just around the corner £200 in vat for sripdown replacement of all seals and recalibration, i used a company in chingford, northeast london
