Bongo Fury

Hi All

In the last while, when I start the bongo up, it shakes loads n there is smoke from the exhaust. After its warmed up, theres no prob. Someone said this could be the glow bulbs, which would be reassuring is this likely? If so is it an easy thing for me to replace?

It's a little bit awkward, but easily done. I managed, it was a bit fiddly, you just have to make sure you get the right length ones and make sure you disconnect the battery while replacing them. Tom

Yes it does indeed sound as if your glowplugs are at fault patjunfa... Treat em like sparkplugs, replace the entire set, even though it's probably just the one plug that is at fault.

General advice seems to be to go for the NGK ones rather than get the cheaper ones - as they don't seem to last.

I'll probably replace with NGK's quite soon, i have a sneaky feeling that one of my plugs might just be on it's way out...8 months after fitting

How do you mean, start it up slower. You are supposed to wait until the glow plug light on the dash goes out then say count ten before you fire a diesel bongo up.

Not if the glow plugs and the compressions are up to scratch Tony - light out and turn the key, even down to minus 7 the other week.

If it starts up ok & idles smoothly for a few seconds before it goes into judder & smoke mode then it could be the banjo filter. I cured mine by cleaning the banjo filter & changing the main fuel filter - unfortunately I don't know which one cured it!

The improved running as the engine runs suggests to me that it's the plugs at fault, i'd always look there first with starting issues.

When mine were on the way out, i developed a routine of switching the ignition on, wait for light to extinguish...Wait five or six seconds, ignition off, then immediately on again, same again with the glowplug light...I'd do that two or three times in case one of the plugs was slow. It seemed to do the trick, nice clean starts when i remembered, long cranks, stumbles, and puffs of blue smoke when i forgot!

They will need replacing sooner rather than later though, the plugs will deteriorate at an accelerated rate now.
