Bongo Fury

Hi,

I've been steadily fixing small things on my bongo using all the great tips on the forum, but I've found one that I can't remedy from searching.

the dashboard vent to the right of the steering wheel is broken. I have removed it, but it looks like I have to take the whole dash apart to replace it - which sounds a lot of work! I was expecting to find that I could simply push fit the new one in.

Can anyone let me know how I replace this vent? I've yet to actually purchase a replacement vent yet, so any thoughts on where to get one would also be greatly appreciated.

Probably find them on Ebay and you'll be relieved to hear that you just push them in.

The end panel on the dash (visible when you open the door) should come off & I think you can access it from behind, you may have to take out the clocks for access which only takes 5 minutes. I think I got mine from Bongobits, I had to do one of the middle ones, took a lot of faffing about from behind, wouldn't fancy doing it again, but the end ones shouldn't be to bad as they look quite accessible.

I've just had a look and can't see them on EBay. Try a breakers as you can get them out without breaking them - push the vent right in at the top so the vent's facing the roof, then you can grip it and pull it out. If it's stubborn, use a very small flatblade screwdriver to tweak the edge. To refit is easier than getting it out.

I tried that when I did mine, no way it was going to happen without something breaking & damaging the surround, unless I was doing something wrong.

Unlucky, ours was a piece of cake.

I got a second hand one from bongobits - taking out was really difficult (but it was broken anyway ), going in was easy enough.

Wow, doesn't time fly! I can't believe it's now mid-April and I have still yet to get this vent in.

Mine definitely doesn't want to simply push in. I guess I'm going to have strip the dash down a little to get this in.

My damaged one came out and I tried to get it back in unsuccesfully too! I am waiting for my new one before trying again.

Having replaced another one since my last post I can say that the easiest way to get them out, is to push them in a few inches first. Then wiggle sideways and pull out.
The new one will push in easy enough.

Well, I've finally managed to get it in, however it was a bit of a challenge and I broke it playing with the different methods unfortunately

I did however come up with a different technique for getting an airvent in which I tried with the now broken replacement. It works as follows:

1. take a length of string, and wrap it around the replacement air vent so that you have hold of both ends trailing away from the front of the vent - don't knot it!

2. push the air vent through the hole and beyond into the venting tube coming into the vent hole from the dash.

3. Use the string to pull the air vent into position from the rear - it locates very easily as the dash is clearly designed to allow them to locate from the rear

4. unwrap the string, and pull through, leaving the vent in place.

Unfortunately, my earlier attempt to go in from the side, as per Kirsty's suggestion didn't work. I then tried to push it in place from the front, which did not work again - put did result in me breaking it. I then played with the string idea and that did work.

I guess it either goes in easily, or it doesn't in which case the string approach seems to work best.

Right, off to order another new replacement, but this time I know how to get it in!
