Bump

When I drive over speed humps or a very bumpy road I get a noise from the back of the Bongo. It's as if the bushes are knackered, but my mechanic said they are alright when he changed the front ones.I wondered if it could be the bump stopper that is near the back axle.I had a look underneath but could not see it.

Am I looking in the wrong place. Can anyone tell me where it is.

Hi Steady,
Check the exhaust that goes over the back axle,or maybe the rear tailgate

With sufficient load on, the back suspension can defo. bottom out. Its a solid kind of whump when it does. Best avoided! Usually happens to me though at some speed and when the road rises and dips sharply.
I found worn droplnks and anit-roll bar bushes tended to show up not on speed bumps, but on uneven / potholed surfaces where the suspension was moved to the point of shuddering somewhat (which it tends to anyway - the Bongo is not a Rolls Royce). Once that happens, any looseness in bushes etc. shows up as a sympathetic clonking noise. So try that test if you are trying to assess things.

Should be a bump stop either side above the axle, but a few have fallen off - Bigdaddycain is the fallen off bumpstop expert

How did your mechanic ascertain the rear bushes were ok? Visually it is very hard to tell. if the front ones have needed replacement, the rear are the same age, so are just as worn IMO, replace the brackets while your doing them, I had both break within a couple of months of changing the bushes . Could be the droplinks too?

Hi Kirsty
My mechanic only looked at them to see if there was any splits in the rubber. The front ones were an advisory on the MOT.He used to be a mechanic for Fords and said that the Bongo has the same suspension as a Ford Transit.Perhaps I will get him to come and have another look at them.

Same set up or same parts? that'd be interesting to know for compatibility - I'm sure someone must have checked that at some point.
