MOT and Veg Oil

Hi,
we have our first (for us) MOT coming up soon and I've read on here about putting veg oil in to "clear out" the system just prior to the MOT (helps reduce emmissions?).
So, how much do I add? Is this to a full tank, half full, nearly empty?
And what veg oil shall I use? (will only be a yearly thing, so ease of purchase more important than price)
Thanks in advance........

Around 20% veg oil should do the trick. Most oil sold in supermarkets labelled as vegetable oil is rapeseed oil -- which works well, and is the cheapest.
I don't know why diesel engines produce less smoke with veg oil in the tank, but my bongo had lower emissions with veg oil in tank than without (but passed both times).

easiest way is half a tank diesel, then put 9 ltrs veg oil (morrisons rapeseed or similar) then fill up with diesel. have a good motorway run before the mot ,get the engine nice and warm and give it some revs, then mot should sail through on emissions.
had my mot yesterday no problem apart from the slight smell of chips in the mot centre, making them feel hungry.

Yep, good suggestion... If you've never used veg oil in your bongo before spout... Don't overdo it first time, small increasing increments if you decide to switch to a full time "home brew" fuel.
You'll notice your engine will go a tad quieter, and a little perkier off the line too!
Good luck with ya mot...

MOT passed today! (I'd got a bit ahead of myself on the first post

- somehow managed to add the "1 month before" date twice)
Despite filling the garage with smoke, and leaving the lads wondering why they wanted chips at 8.30am, it sailed through the emissions test.
I've been putting a 5:1 (diesel/rapeseed) in for the last month.
Cheers again............

Great stuff spout!

I forgot to mention, it'd be advisable to get your fuel filter replaced around about now. (it's just a one-off thing after using veggy)

Perhaps to clarify that the fuel filter might be replaced after using veggie oil for the first time because the veggie oil clears so much crud from the system that the filter might get clogged.

Never did need to replace my fuel filter, ran for about a year on veg oil when it was worth the aggro. Still got the new one on standby

Nor me, never had the chance to change it, lol never needed to whenever it was inspected it was found to be fine and still is now and I am still using veg oil, not bad eh, five years on and still going strong on the oil, little did I know what I was causing when I blabbed about it. Never mind as long as it stays at 69p per litre I will still use it.

As a lot of the peeps here know, I run a 2 tank system. Put the Bongo through the test on 100% veg, the emmisions were to low to test (fast pass) my Pajero was the same on veg. Bio cleans out your system like a vindaloo does you........
If you are going to try bio carry a spare fuel filter as all the gunk stripped out of your tank and lines will block it.

Has anybody tried the bio fuel that Morrison's now sell at the pumps, ?
there is not much difference in prices between the bio and the diesel so Ive not bothered, but i was curious if anybody had used it.
And would putting the bio in reduce the emissions for the MOT.
can you run on all bio ,or does it have to be mixed with diesel the same way as we do with veg oil (with a few exceptions using 100%veg)

Not tried it Dave.
You can run on it by itself - it's a straight replacement for normal diesel and is, I believe, 30% veg oil (B30) that has been processed, so it's not the same as putting 30% rape seed oil in the tank.
I have no idea if it will reduce emissions but would assume it does, in the same way that cooking oil does.

Here is the factsheet for the B30 blend supplied to and sold by Morrisons.

Baby failed her MOT this week on a hole in the exhaust and to much smoke on the emmisons test, other than that all ok new exhaust ordered putting in some fuel system cleaner today, might try veg oil or see if our morrisons have any bio fuel
