Bongo Fury

after my brake troubles in ireland my van still in ireladn has broke its starter motor.i ordered one on ebay and tomorrow am fitting it with a local irish mechanic.
anything i should tell this guy as i have to travel 4 hours back to where its broken down and i dont want to have us break a part as we didnt know the correct way to do the job etc

guys is real friendly and i trust him and he knows what he is doing but i have faith in my life being awkward.

what happend was i started van and was a terrible noise like a bag of bolts being chucked round in a bag. turned it off and stzarted again with same result. van started both times.

3 rd time was just an air type low whistle noise an didnt start

we already hit starter with hammer and did turn once, then just click,then nothing etc so deff the starter is screwed but was a bit worried about the noise as the thing had stated, will the engine of been damaged at all?

disconnect battery earth

2 connections for wire1 wire is a push connector the other is bolted to the side, this is live hence the need for disconnecting battery earth( I shorted it to earth )

then there are 3 bolts holding the motor on its a very simple job and no mechanic should need pointers

well i wont get a better answer than that.
can it be done roadside without jacking it up? and anyone have an opionion or what the mental noise was?

You just need to lift the drivers seat, dead easy, no jacking needed, You'll have to take off the air intake to get to it, shouldn't take more than 20 minutes to do the whole thing.
The noise doesn't sound good, may have mashed some of the teeth, I think you'll see what it was when you take it off.

Sometimes a tap will just jolt the solenoid into making contact. Obviously it's not a cure, but it may get it started to get you home.

Changing the contacts is the only answer, but it's quite cheap and relatively easy to do.

Very true Moonshine, worked for me several times before it gave up finally, by which time I had the spares to change the contacts & plunger.

Perhaps the "bag of bolts" noise was the starter not fully disengaging from the flywheel, the engine would sort of run, but with the starter still engaged would impede it from a smooth tickover... It's just as well you switched it off i reckon!
