Bongo Fuel Pump, post 1999

I am keen to purchase the best Diesel Bongo I can. They use the Japanese equivalent of the Bosch rotary pump. But in 1999 it was changed from mechanical to electric & fly by wire. I believe there was a change to more electronic control at the same time.
Did this introduce unreliability problems?
Also with the Mechanical pump a system of flashing lights was used to show faults. With the fly by wire pump it was ECU, but was it OBD2 compliant?
I am keen to purchase my first Bongo within the next 2 weeks. If not, I may not be able to manage it for personal reasons. I must get a good one so am interested in post 1999 Diesel subject to above.
Thanks for any help.
