Got the cooling sorted I think. Driving the van through Milton Keynes last week, and I seemed to bang the back box whilst going over a speed bump.

Anyhow on Sunday, I clambered underneath as the exhaust was knocking somwehere terrible and found it broken!

The pipe that comes over the rear sub has broken going into the front of the backbox. They are still connected as the pipe flange is inside the backbox section still, but it was pivoting and moving and allowing the whole thing to sag until the exhaust pipe was resting on the sub. So I have gotten some metal coat hanger wire and used the two holes in the sub to suspend the whole thing and it seems to work ok.

Anyhow I then went through the paperwork I got with the van with a niggle in the back of my head, I found what I was looking for. The excuse for an exhaust was put on by Kwik-Fit in July this year, and I had found the receipt.

It was fitted in Devon, but the warranty should still hold for any branch of Kwik-Fit? What do you guys think, can I get it replaced?

And I am thinking that when it is replaced that I will put the coat hanger wire back to stop it dropping and breaking like that again.

Hmm it will be interesting what they say when I get there next weekend.

Mmm - might be worth looking into this further with the Sale of Goods act as I'm sure you should at least get 12 months warranty on it. Alternatively, could you ask the previous owner if he could take it in on your behalf?

They'll probably politely point out that you weren't the original purchaser
Don't bother with the back box, just get a straight through pipe fitted instead.

If that is the case, I could just pull the back box off, and leave the pipe suspended in the coat hanger wire. What is the back box doing then if you replace it with a straight pipe?

I reckon too. Its not fit for purpose.

It would appear to be one of the most useless products ever made and if you have ever tried lifting one you will wonder whether you really need half a hundredweight of useless ballast in the back of your Bongo.

I fail to see what useful purpose it serves. Mine will not be replaced when it goes again - I wish I hadn't bothered replacing it last time.

From what others have said, the back box is there so that it's weight can break the exhaust

You def need an extension pipe to get the exhaust fumes away from beneath the van Just finish it off with a nice chrome exhaust tip using the original rubber hanger to hold a mounting bracket

Hi if it's broken off from the back box I'd change it, reason?, well it happened to ours and the back box upended and acted as a jack and took out the rear valence it was a costly mess, the new box cost only £45 from Iezura the valence three times that, you know it makes sense

It's cheaper still just to remove the back box and fit a vanvliet style straight through.

Anyway - Why would you want to leave the back box on if it's broken off?
And - If you fit another one it will only break again and with luck (or lack of it) take out the valence all over again.
So that is yet another reason mine is going before it falls off again.

Take the opportunity to get a stainless steel back box. 2nd hand ones come up from time to time & they look the bees!!

I might see about a straight pipe, after I have spoken to Kwik-Fit. If they fix it, then I will let them.

But whilst under there, and adding the coat hanger wire, I decided to put the hanger wire back in any case as it was evident the weight of the box caused the problem when I jolted over a speed hump. You can see it needs more support just from looking at it. There are two holes in the subframe, almost there for a purpose other than drainage. It will not hurt to add it, and might save breakages later.
