on the way to work this morning mason alarm started bleeping so i pulled over and straight away could see steam coming from under the bonnet (lets it over with no hayden alarm fitted, its that bad at the moment its all i can do to put diesel in..) anyway top hose split,as luck would have it i began collecting hoses and had a top hose so i got to work and later got the hose and fitted it,i bled it using peg leg pete"s method (sorry bdc no waterpipe available ) anyway i think it went ok warmed her but by the time i got home (3/4 miles) top hose v hot, bottom hose luke warm. so my question is have i bled correctly and if not where do i go from here ? thanks p p pete and thanks for all advise offered.... all the best neil... (nearly put" love neil " then..)

Bottom hose rarely gets hot - that's normal. As long as it's not actually overheating and the heaters are working, it looks like you've bled it successfully. :D

Sounds about right in these cold conditions.

Run the engine for at least 5 minutes with the aircon off at 2500 rpm - the bottom hose should then be hot and the fans should cut in if the system is porperly bled

all done 50/50 mix of coolant no overheating, better heat out of blowers and temp gauge is actually a bit lower than before so just to clear any paranoia if any damage had been done what would i be looking out for ? except water in the oil and exhaust gas in the header tank ? anything else to keep an eye on? thanks again everyone and now i"m going to sit down and write a letter to santa for an engine saver...maybe if i"m a really really good boy........
