Might be worth looking at this thread - http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... =3&t=26257 .
Personally if I had any sort of coolant leak on mine, I'd want to know why & where , I havent had to top mine up in about a year.
The system takes about 13 litres from memory, recommended concentration is 50%, I usually use a 5 litre container of concentrate which IMO is an adequate concentration (for antifreeze & anti corrosion) at nearly 40%, hope this helps.

If you just stick a "tub" in it after making room...It will be a strong mix co's whats in there will be nearly 50/50 already.
Also how do you make "room" for 5 ltrs?
You are going to have to drain down to do that...with all the hassel of bleeding.
Why not get a tester from Halfords and see what you have in there? Anything over 40% should be fine. If its a bit less just "suck" a pint out of the header tank and put a pint of neat antifreeze in...run around a bit and recheck etc,.
Unless that is you want to do a total change??

Also this

and this

If you are topping up and don't know what type of coolant is already in there, use the Universal stuff to avoid possible problems caused by mixing different types.

Has it had the coolant fluhed & changed since coming over from Japan? If not, or if you are not sure, I would do a full flush, backflushing the rad, & refill as European & Japanese coolants apparantly don't mix, possibly causing serious coolant issues.

Good point Kirsty...it seems mixing incompatable coolants can cause excessive corrosion and is seen as a grey paste coating the insides.

thanks for the replys folks...

the coolant has been changed since japan for sure coz i filled it up when i got it (just over a year ago) and it has a small leak somewhere, the reason i noticed it has a leak is its got quite hot a couple of times and luckily ive noticed it and topped it up (slowly)...i cant be arsed fiddling around trying to find it it must be really small..all i do now is check it regulary which is how i know it prob had a weak mix in....
another thing i thought i would mention is there is talk of removing a cover of some sort to get to the radiator drain i think..i looked under the bongo earlier on and right on the end of the rad just the bit you can see thats not covered by the cover is a small plastic knob which when turned drained water....!,i did this with the bleed pipe open and the expansion tank cap off and let out 5 litres and then refilled with antifreeze and run the engine for a while with cap off and pipe open then closed them up and went for a drive..about 20 miles..and everything seems ok...this is all i did last time...so thats how i (made room)...

thanks all...cliffy

I would not risk doing that again....you were lucky not to get a massive airlock with all the horrors that can entail. [-X

like this one...that was one of the times....before....i figured there was a tiny leak somewhere, someone said it wouldnt have happened without intervention well it did due to the small leak..i now know to check the level on a regular basis...i do quite a few miles in the bongo up and down the country and the method of refilling has not let me down...just the small leak if i dont watch it...!..one of those alarm thingys might be a good warning..how much are they and are they quick and easy to fit...?

Just read a item in a mag...If your coolant strength is over 50%...because antifreeze is not as good at cooling as water...it can contribute to overheating !!!
Just somthing I read.
