Bongo Fury

Hi,
My 1996 Diesel Bongo was driving along fine and all of a sudden the engine just died. I had it towed home and a mechanic friend an I did some checks but could not get it to start.

It had repairs done in summer and new timing belt etc and benn going fine since.

We checked that the belt is still in tact and seems fine.

Also fuel is getting up to the injectors and it turns over ok but just will not fire! Sounds like it wants to fire but won't.

Any one have any ideas what I could do next please???

Have you checked the stop solenoid? Maybe the conection has broken.

Where can I find the stop solenoid?

Obviously on the fuel line but where?

Might be a supid question......How do you test that part?

Remove the wire (8mm spanner), switch on the ign. and touch the top of the solenoid with the wire again - it should "click" which indicates the valve is open to allow fuel past.

A dirty connection could have the same effect,or insufficient grip on the terminal (i think it's a spade connector).

When this happened to me I discovered it was the 'engine' fuse in the fusebox by the driver. Engine would turn on the starter but no sign of it firing.

Maybe you missed the 6th post down and the mention of using an 8mm spanner Ste.............

Stop solenoid & Engine fuses etc all checked out as ok.

Should i be thinking of using the diagnostic connection to get some sort of readout to point to the problem.

Is there a computer type device that plugs in and diagnoses the problem?

Bongo still trying to start but will not!

By-passed the fuel filter and fed diesel from a can to the pump but still did not start.

Does anyone know how the fuel is pumped? Is it as I suspect a mechanical type that sucks the fuel from the tank? or electrical pump pressurizating the fuel?

Also there seemed to be very little fuel drawn in to the pipe, much less than I expected!!!

When the engine turns there seems to be burn't fuel type exhaust smoke expelled.

Could it be a timing problem? Maybe the cam sensor? wherever it is? Can this be checked out?

Help and good advice required ASAP!!!!

May be completely barking up the wrong tree, but have you checked the banjo filter gauze on top of the fuel pump?
I know your initial problem was that it gave up on the M1, but is there voltage getting to the glowplugs & are they working?
AFAIK it's just the mechanical fuel pump drawing from the tank.
Be surprised it it's a timing problem if it was ok before, unless the cambelt tensioner has given up & the cambelt's jumped?
Hopefully someone with a bit more firsthand knowledge of these particulars will be along shortly.

There's no pump apart from the main fuel pump which has a lift pump incorporated in it
