hi all,
following on from my removal of the rocker cover,i found that i need to replace a bearing/shell/cap or whatever you call it from the timing belt end of the camshaft.can you please have a look at this pic
(Link removed)
and it`s the pdf pic at the bottom.i`ve circled the offending part, and wonder what i should call it when i phone a breakers.
one other thing, when i thought it was sticking hydraulic lifters,i used ever thinner oil(i`m currently using 5/30 i think, but now that it seems to be s lightly worn camshaft, should i use a much thicker oil to hopefully quieten things down a bit?
thanks
jamie

You've obviously ignored my advice in your other thread Jamie - As far as I can make out the caps are matched to the head - i.e. you can't just fit any old cap to the head as the caps/head are machined together so the cam doesn't break!

sorry, didn`t mean to ignore you, just didn`t fully understand the advice.sorry!i wonder if that`s why the cap is damaged,if he replaced it with one not matching the head?if so,why would he have done that anyway?
thanks

I clearly remember your Bongo even before you bought it Jamie. It was being discussed on here as to whether it was a "bargain" or not.
My instinctive reaction at the time was that the seller knew exactly what he had on his hands - a bit of a pup. The fact that it was unconverted, under 10 years old and had a serious engine knock justified the low asking price of £2k. They knew exactly what they had brought in from Japan! Why else would they offer it for sale at around £3k less than their normal prices?
My own thoughts on it was that it would need to be absolutely immaculate (apart from the faulty engine) to warrant the asking price because it would cost an additional £2.5K + to convert and a couple of grand for another engine including labour if it came to the worst.
You took a gamble - that's commendable. You've been asking a lot of people for answers to your problems - some you've not taken heed of - and now you're looking to fix /bodge it as cheaply as possible. You need some expert advice on this one - people HAVE given it over the months - take it - a garage would charge you for it!!
I wish you all the best.
Alan

A replacement complete head which hasn't been skimmed, if only one head is skimmed on a vee engine the manifolds might not line up/seal properly.
