Bongo Fury

Hi all, my beloved van has developed a nasty tendancy to belch black smoke out of the back under acceleration. I've tried all the stop-smoke addatives for both the engine and fuel but it onlt cures it for a short time then comes back slowly but surely, and advice would be gratefully accepted!!

These can become particularly troublesome on bongo's as they age.

Without going into the in's and out's of exactly how they work, i'll touch on why they are there in the first place.

Japan had/have some serious issues with regards to smog in the more heavily populated areas (tokyo especially) So the government needed to be see n to be doing something about the issue. Hence the E.G.R. fitted to the bongo.

It helps with emissions on tickover,fine when new, but a real pain when they get stuck open or closed.

They aren't really required in the uk market, (i bet 1995 ford rangers don't have one fitted),remove it, blank it off,and enjoy a cleaner running,more fuel efficient,smoother,quieter,more responsive bongo!

You can source a blanking kit from either allans vehicle services (pm doone), or from forum member nick skidmore. (again, pm him for details).

I don't have a lot going for me on that front!

360 miles (not km's)to the tank (average).

4WD,bullbars,big wheels,big fat driver...not an ideal recipe for economical driving! I'm quite light footed though when i wanna be.

lol, i wouldn't complain if i got that much!!! mine's currently making about 330ish to a tank! my local garage owner is off on holiday soon with my money!!!

Blanking of the EGR should help a touch... I have a K&N filter instead of the paper elements, and what can only be described as some sort of aftermarket air regulation/monitoring device fitted to my bongo. My bongo doesn't seem to drive much different to any other bongo i have ever driven, so i can't really comment on any dynamic differences from the alterations made to mine.

ta, will be heading down the local dealer and get one of those filters tomorrow!! any other tips to increase the mpg?

I'm certainly no authority in such matters alec, but the fundamentals revolve around anticipation of traffic movements ahead, correct inflation of tyres,and if you find you need to use the brakes, you haven't anticipated well enough in the first place!

Hi Alec have had the same problem myself, i have also tried all the additives, got blanking plates from Allans but still the same prob. So today fitted new injectors and they have made a hell of a difference.

Mines blanked off too but still pumps a bit of smoke out when booting it up hill.

I stick a tub of Wynnes Stop Smoke in with each oil change now which helps a bit but doesn't really cure it.

I think the black stuff is unburnt fuel, will check if injectors are healthy at the next spanner session.

I rarely see more than 250 on regular running to work/weekends away & stuff.

After 200 miles the guage is on E, I risk another 30 or so miles then stuff about 55/60 liters in.

ta, when i first got the van i was only getting 280 from a tank and i was seriously disturbed. i tried injector cleaner fluids etc and it seemd to improve a bit but only by about 30 miles or so, then wynnes stop-smoke and also oil treatment. will look into getting the injectors changed and see how that goes.

how easy was it to change them?

Pretty easy if you've the correct deep socket - impossible if you haven't - you'll also need new washers between the injector and the head
